I had this type of bowl set.....not Kitchenaid however, a hard melamine set in red. They were my "go to" bowl set....I do LOTS of baking/cooking. They were pretty old and did get a few chips around the tops. I went on a hunt @ Amazon for new ones. I wanted the same type of set, however I wished someone made a microwavable set. Many times you need to to melt/soften butter or cream cheese for a baked item and I wanted to do that right in that bowl, rather than having to dirty another vessel. The only set I saw on Amazon was from Trudeau. A nice set, but I held off. Then, found this set in pink @ TJ Maxx for $19. On the label it said microwavable....I was estatic. *****ADDENDED REVIEW: Bought these and absolutely loved them UNTIL....for no apparent reason, the largest one just cracked across the bottom! I don't put them in the dishwasher, being they're too big and everyone knows you you can only top rack plastics, so I was stymied. I do use a mixer in them OCCASIONALLY....DUH, they are mixing bowls! I have the two smaller left, but going forward, I will use my 2 quart handled glass Pyrex instead of wasting $$$ on another 4-1/2 qt KitchenAid. I wish I could warn everybody about these loser bowls.....for all who rave about them, just wait....you will encounter the "mysterious crack" that happens in the bottom! I have seen them reviewed @ other sites as well, and so many people had the same cracking problem. Very strange. I'm going to contact KA about it....just doesn't make sense.

I am so sad to give these such a low review because I LOVE Kitchenaid and have had great luck with many other products that I own. But I have gone through three sets of these bowls over the last five years and all of them have ended up cracking. The cracks start small on the bottom and the bowls can continue being used for dry ingredients, but after a while, the cracks widen and the bowls become useless. After the second set did the same as the first, I wouldn't have replaced them, but my husband surprised me and got me the third set. We take good care of them, only hand washing them, but they didn't make it. I have some much less expensive bowls that are made from a more flexible plastic that have held up fine. I think they used a material that is too brittle.

I love these mixing bowls. They are super easy to clean and are microwaveable. The rubber grips on the bottom of the bowls are very helpful in reducing any sliding across the counter surface. Although I don't have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer, these mixing bowls are supposed to be compatible, so I'm looking forward to still using these bowls if and when I do get a stand mixer.

The bowls stickup nicely and are very easy to store. I also like the non skid rubber bottom which makes stirring things much easier.
