I bought this very attractive set from Costco about 1 1/2 yrs ago. One small knife broke; I forget how but today I was cutting a raw potato with the largest knife and then swept the cut potatoes into my slow cooker. Then I notice a piece of the blade had broken off. I had to fish it out of my food!

The first time I used one of the knives the ceramic blade broke away from the handle, I was cutting into lettuce. :/

I purchased this KitchenAid Ceramic Knife set three weeks ago and sadly, that's all the use one is supposed to get out of it apparently. Already the blade on one of the larger knives has chipped in three places. The latest chips occurred while I was cutting an avocado - what knife blade chips on an avocado? I know how to use a knife properly and I certainly know how to care for my knives as well, so in no way did I go at that avocado like a butcher does with a slab of meat. I understand full well that a ceramic knife blade is naturally going to be more delicate than a regular metal blade knife...but please.

So. If you're somebody who doesn't mind throwing away $30 dollars or more on this knife set, or doesn't mind exercising extreme delicate caution in cutting their food as to not break their knife blade, then by all means - buy this knife set.

I've had these less than a month. I started using them at Thanksgiving. At first I did not care for them because thy feel different than steel knives. I perservered and continued to use them, getting used to them after about two weeks. I fell in love with the serrated one over a tomato slicing extravaganza. And then one broke, the blade snapped off right at the handle. And then another one broke same place. So I'm down two knives and one of the knives I'm left with is the chef knife which is weighted poorly and too narrow top to bottom so you cant get a good chop. So even though the serrated knife cut the BEST tomato slices ever, don't even consider buying these knives. Just step away from these knives.

The first set of Ceramic knives I purchased was from another brand. The tips of those ceramic blades would just chip off on their own. I thought they looked pretty bad so I decided to look for another set. Here is my review....

1) Ceramic Blades: First of all, I do understand that ceramic blades are sharp and stay sharp (the advantage) but are not for cutting hard things - don't even try. So, I have ONE metal blade for times like that, and the rest are a collection of ceramic bladed knives. I like these blades, and the handles are dishwasher safe - even better. Rating: 5 of 5 stars.

2) Not a full tang: You know, I read the reviews of Ceramic bladed knives and there is always some reviewer complaining that it does not have a full tang. That means that the blade material goes all the way back to the handle. First of all, why would you need that for a ceramic bladed knife since you are cutting hard things with it? To even bring that up simply defies the logic for the purpose of this type of knife. Rating: N/A

3) Handle Comfort: I love them! They fit my hand great. I have no complaints at all. 5 of 5 stars.

4) Looks: I like the touch of chrome at the handle end of the knife. 5 of 5 stars.

5) How they cut: There is an assortment of knives, and they all work really good. I used the serrated edge for soft cheese or bread. Smaller knives for slicing up smaller veggies. The largest knife I use for cutting thawed chicken breasts into strips. There is one knife in the bunch called a utility knife - just ignore that. There is no such thing as a ceramic bladed utility knife. You don't want to use them for cutting wire, plastic or any other thing that might be considered "utility" unless its soft.

I am very happy with my purchase and I will be giving sets away for Christmas to friends and family. Remember, make sure you also have at least one metal knife too. Otherwise you will break these!

I absolutely, without reservation, like these knives!! These are NOT every day/all purpose knives. They're good for slicing/dicing & chopping fruits and vegetables. I wouldn't suggest using them for cutting in to a whole chicken or such. They're somewhat of a delicate knife but with a quality use. Extremely sharp. And I like that they won't rust. My advise... Delicate use, wash/dry and sleeve immediately after use. Do NOT soak or place in the dishwasher EVER.
KitchenAid.... Love your products!! Keep'm coming.

UPDATE: So I got the hang of ceramic knives and stopped cutting myself on them. I did notice that they weren't cutting things as well at my steel knives so I used them mostly for cutting up softer/easier things like veggies and kept using my steel knives for heavier work... Today, less than 2 months after purchase, the knife broke off of the handle while I was cutting a red pummelo. For those who aren't familiar... it's pretty much a large grapefruit.... The knife couldn't handle the soft white fleshy part. I am so disappointed! Now I'm scared to use any of the 3 remaining knifes out of fear of injury when they break! I will most certainly be buying a good set of steel knives and getting rid of these and my older steel knives very soon.

Original post: I have always used stainless steel knives and wanted a change. I heard that ceramic knives stay sharper longer and I liked that there was zero chance of rusting. What I didn’t realize is that there is a sharp learning curve. The difference in weight led to me cutting myself 3 times in 3 days. I felt like a child. They also seem to not be as sharp as steel knives I’ve had. Lastly, I find myself afraid of breaking them which is probably silly, but still.
