Some general information about the oven follows but perhaps more importantly – how did the oven perform? The convection feature was my primary focus so I baked a few things – a fruit cobbler, cookies, a small crumb cake, made toast and a frozen chicken breast.
As is usually the case with convection ovens I expected the temperature would need to be reduced by 25 degrees and cooking time carefully watched but the oven did not behave the way I expected. Baking went well sticking to the times and temperatures provided in my recipes and the food was not as dried-out as it can get with a convection oven. The fan is located on one side of the oven and runs during the bake cycle, so I have no explanation.
I thought perhaps using the normal baking temperature and time had to do with the somewhat heavy ceramic dishes I used for the cobbler and crumb cake, but I used the included metal broiler pan for the cookies and the chicken breast with the same result. This almost seems like a semi-convection although that is clearly a term without a definition. To avoid problems, it is probably best to monitor the cooking, but ultimately using the oven was less fussy than I expected..
Using one rack and the included broiler pan, the small batch of cookies were nicely browned top and bottom. The broiler pan has a slick finish so the cookies did not stick. I also baked an 8 x 8 inch crumb cake with a perfect result. Tested for doneness at the regular time, the cake in the convection oven was moist and golden brown.
Toasting, I selected the medium setting and the bread was evenly browned. If starting with a cold oven it is recommended it be run on a medium toast cycle before use. Very straightforward, the darkness setting is the timer. The bell goes off when the time is up. The oven easily holds six slices of bread at one time and all toasted evenly, including the back side, which my previous toaster oven did not do nearly as well.
The frozen marinated chicken breast is skinless and I was concerned it would dry out but it was moist and tender. Five minutes before cooking was complete I moved the rack up to the top position and switched to broil to finish. The result was perfect.
Not overfilling baking dishes is wise because the ensuing mess will be time consuming to clean off the perforated heating rods. This is a thought that occurred to me as I watched the cobbler enthusiastically bubbling and worried I may have misjudged volume.
The two included racks can both be placed in the oven so two small baking sheets filled with cookies can be baked at once. If desired, the racks can also be turned upside down to obtain more precise placement within the oven. There are three positions within the oven. Generally, the top one is for broiling, middle for toasting or baking and the bottom for baking.
Broiler and racks are dishwasher safe but they don’t recommend it. In my experience this means the finish may dull from the harsh detergents and high heat. Some people will not buy anything that isn’t dishwasher safe, so perhaps this is why the guide mentions it can be done but in the same breath suggest the user hand wash.
The cord is approximately 33 inches long so plan accordingly. The oven sides and top should also be placed a minimum of four inches away from walls and cabinets. Included is a clearly written user guide which is worth a read before starting. There is no specific cooking information/charts or recipes included in the guide.
There is no preheat setting or light to indicate the desired temperature has been reached although there is a small white LED on the front panel that glows when the oven is on. The method recommended for preheating in the user guide is to set the timer for ten minutes and then turn it back to five, let it time out (a beep sounds) then place the food in the oven and set the timer for the full amount of time required. For whatever reason, this instruction is mentioned repeatedly in the guide.
The maximum time on the timer dial is 60 minutes but it may be set to “On” and the oven will stay on for four hours when it automatically shuts off. To indicate the oven has shut off the white LED light on the front panel will blink.
And, not surprisingly there is no interior light and the glow from the upper and lower heating elements goes on and off and even when on is insufficient to use to monitoring the cooking, some outside method is required. I use a flashlight to check on progress since opening the door permits heat to escape.
Overall, I like this convection/toaster oven. It does everything it promises to do. The lettering on the dials is readable, the clean-up is minimal and its usage is intuitive. I cooked during the heat of summer keeping the oven running almost an entire day and the house remained cool. It genuinely fills in many gaps in the kitchen, completely replacing a toaster and reducing the amount of time a full-size oven is needed. An oven light would be helpful but it is not a fatal flaw. Very pleased.
In short: avoid. And, especially, avoid the scam warranties Amazon tries to sell you. Shame on everyone involved.
