Invaluable Kitchen Gadget

I just ordered my second KitchenAid KHB100 to replace the one I've had for several years. The old one is still going strong, but somehow the power cord was damaged to the point that I could see the copper wires, so I figured better safe than sorry.

In any case, this is a very powerful blender with a 200-watt motor. Despite its power, it's relatively light and easy to hold since it plugs in and has a long, heavy-duty power cord. Because it doesn't have a bulky battery, there's no unsightly charger to take up counter space, and no worry about running out of power while you're using it. The speed setting is adjustable over a wide range, up to 10,000 RPM if I recall correctly, making it perfect for a variety of tasks.

I use the hand blender frequently to do things such as blend some or all of a pot of soup to make it smooth and creamy, to combine sauce ingredients, to make dressings and salsa, etc. Virtually anything you can do in a regular blender can be done more quickly and with a lot less fuss and muss with a hand blender (well, maybe not crush ice). The power unit easily detaches from the stainless shaft and blade unit, which is dishwasher safe.

The immersible hand blender is a great help in the kitchen, and the KitchenAid is simply the best one I've found. Very highly recommended!

Cumbersome in the kitchen.

Pros: This stick blender is mighty and powerful.

It's stainless steel base and shaft make it easy to clean; and it doesn't stain like the white plastic ones.

Cons: For normal kitchen use I found it awkward and heavy.

Nearly 17" tall (with the switch at the tallest point) and weighing nearly 2 pounds, it is cumbersome. Considering that most countertops are 36" tall, it is 53" high when operating. That's shoulder height or higher on most woman.

The power switch requires continual pressure to operate it, which adds more stress to the already too high, heavy device. It's more comfortable if you put your mixing bowl (or included plastic container) down in the sink. This lowers the device considerably and makes it much easier to operate.

If you plan to keep it on your counterop (as I do) be prepared for it to fall over often, as it is very top heavy. I screwed a metal cup holder into the underside of my cabinet to "hang" its cord and keep it from crashing into every other appliance I have there. If it had come with a stand or wall-mounted holder, I would have rated it a 4. If you plan to keep it in a drawer, you will have no problem.

Overall, it's a nice gadget, and certainly easier than cleaning a blender.

One of my best kitchen purchases ever

I can't believe I've had this for five years now. It kind of reminds me of an old punch line: until you've had it, you don't know what all the fuss is about, but once you have, you can't live without it. The handiness of a good stick blender is hard to overstate; being able to take the blender to the food rather than having to pour the food into and out of the blender is fantastic.

I had a cheesy stick blender before this, and the best thing about it was that it prompted me to get a good one -- the KitchenAid. I haven't regretted a single penny of this purchase. I use mine at least every couple of days, and it still seems like new. The motor is smooth, powerful, and fairly quiet. The blade is pretty darn tough, because I've used it on ice to make slushy iced coffee, various other chilled drinks, and smoothies innumerable times, and it's still sharp and nick-free.

I have two cautions to share. One is that it might be larger than you expect, and somewhat heftier; my hand wraps around about a third of the body. The other is that the motor is so powerful that even on a low setting, it's easy to get splashes from what's being blended. I normally use it on the lowest speed, and I think the high speed could possibly kick-start a tornado. Neither of these is a problem for me, and I would heartily recommend this to anyone.

This is a very attractive and convenient kitchen tool. It's easy to use, easy to clean, and does a nice job of blending. You can't blend anything that is deeper than the blending attachment, so you can't have a pot of soup, say, that's deeper than about nine inches or you have to do it in batches.

Also, if you have big chuncks in the mixture, you'll need to really move the blending attachment up and down a lot to "chew" up the big pieces. There is a neat container included with the blender that you can use for smoothies or sauces, with its own seal cap. High quality container, very nice for small-batch stuff.

Works great but breaks somehow easily

I owned this blender for more than 2 years. Not long after purchasing I noticed the plastic piece under the blades came lose and stay lose. No way to push it back or anything. Anyhow, it continued to work... until the plastic piece that attaches to the motor worn out so the motor spins but the blender does not. Some reviewers experienced exactly the same issues.
Now, for the value, it is up to you. After all, it did last me 2 long years of heavy usage (2-3 times a week for soup and a special banana ice cream) always on max power.
However bottom line for me it is disappointing that Kitchen Aid does not offer replacement for the blender portion... making me throw away a perfect, functioning motor. Where is their sustainability message? Hello Kitchen aid, anyone there?

Two have failed on me!

I purchased this item upon recommendation by "Men's Journal," both for price and durability. What a joke! The first one I received broke down the 2nd time I used it. And the replacement lasted only 3-4 months (I used it just 2-3 times per week). This item "appears" to be well made . . . it's quite heavy to heft. But it turns out to be just another pile of junk. Don't waste your money!
