Variable Speed Control dial on top of Blender
A great gift for those with small kitchens, this hand-held blender and its accessories take the place of several larger appliances. Included are a regular blending blade (which can be immersed 8 inches into soup pots or deep bowls), a wire whisk for beating eggs and batters, and an enclosed chopper for nuts, cheese, and fresh herbs. Also included are a four-cup mixing beaker with a snap-lock lid, useful for storing blended ingredients, as well as a drawstring bag to keep all the components together. KitchenAid covers the blender with a one-year, hassle-free replacement warranty. --Ann Bieri

Bad News: There are two things I don't care for, one more serious than the other. On the less serious side (perhaps), it's loud - and as it ages (1 year so far) getting louder. Makes me think of all those warnings years ago about loud hair dryers. Once I started to notice the noise, it began to bother me. I often wrap a kitchen hand towel around the handle to dampen it.
More seriously, it's unsanitary. I use the chopper adaptor several times a week to make fruit shakes. After a few months of use I noticed a sloshing sound in the housing of the adaptor. If i shake it hard, water comes out in little droplets. Disturbingly, if you leave a clean chopper adaptor on a clean chopper bowl overnight, when you open it the next day the smell is terrible. It started to dawn on me that the water trapped in the housing was generating the odor. This morning I got tired of worrying, and pried open the housing. A couple tablespoons of water leaked out, and the interior rim of the housing was coated with brown crud - the composting remains of fruit shakes that leak into the housing.
So... KitchenAid needs to figure out a way to clean the interior of the chopper housing. I'm going to pay $25 for a new chopper adaptor - it's that useful. But this condition should never have occurred. The instructions mention in several places not to immerse the adaptors in water. We didn't. But I now think that instruction is a sidewards reference to the problem. We did wash it by hand every time we used it, which is apparently what caused the problem. Hard to imagine doing otherwise.
Verdict: Really solid functionality. Two-star demerit for poor design leading to unsanitary condition.
This stick blender came highly recommended by an acquaintance, and it doesn't disappoint. With its high-power motor, variable speed settings and versatile accessories, this is a compact and high-impact kitchen tool. Easy to clean, too. I would urge caution if you've never used one of these before, especially when working with very watery liquids as they can end up getting blown right out of your container if you're not careful.
I can't speak to the effectiveness of all of the attachments that come with this because I haven't ever used them but for the use I've described it does a terrific job. I've been using this for five years and it hasn't missed a beat nor is it showing any signs of slowing down. I'm pleased with this purchase.
On the screen it looks nice and light, but in reality it is bulky, much heavier than my old one with bulky thick cord, uncomfortable grip, large and inconvenient dial on top that doesn't make a lot of sense. Also it doesn't have a slow mode, so it seems to powerful for simple egg whisking, and because it it too powerful even on the lowest dial liquids spill out of the container.
The metal insert is supposed to be a healthier choice for blending food while it is still hot, except that its metal blade is held by plastic detail. Why? Also the way it is designed with holes on the bottom makes food splash everywhere- unless you use the tall container.
The tall container is too wide and hard to hold in one hand.
I find this blender OK- it functions, and if I did not have a better experience I would think it is as good as it gets, but after using a very well designed German blender I am quite underwhelmed with this product.
