As others have said, I don't use a hand mixer a whole lot, but when I need one, I need one. I love this mixer. I bought this mixer based on people saying it had a good low speed, and yes it does. My old mixer's speeds were high, super-high, and bat-out-of-hell high.To counter what others have said about the mixer's high speed seeming like medium, we put it to the tachometer test. Yes, the BF has a tachometer, so we hooked it up to the mixers. In the tachometer test, the old mixer's low speed started at 1050 rpm, with the highest speed being 1250 rpm- not a lot of range. The Kitchenaid 5 Speed's low speed was a nice mellow 260 rpm. Speed 2 was 450 rpm, then 650, 800, and 1100 rpm for speeds 3, 4, and 5, respectively. The thing is, even at the high speed, it's very quiet, and doesn't sound like a jet engine about to take off, so I believe it *sounds* like a lower speed, but it's more than enough to whip cream, egg whites, or whatever else you want that high speed for. As for power, I cannot comment; if I'm going to mix bread dough, or some big heavy job, I get out the big heavy stand mixer. Right tool for right job and all that. It's certainly strong enough for some whipped potatoes- it handled creaming cold butter, no problem, so potatoes should be easy.

My mom got this mixer for Christmas and it works great. Since we have had it, we have made chocolate chip cookies and oatmeal cookies. Both came out delicious. Love this product because of its vibrant red and because of how easy it is to use. The beaters attach and detach easy. The speed is easily adjusted. The slow is slow enough when adding in the sugars. Also, we were wondering if the 3.4 lbs was going to be too much to hold but, it isn't. Another great feature is that it can rest on the counter while you add in more ingredients. I highly recommend this hand mixer from KitchenAid.

Contrary to what other reviewers said about this mixers low speed being too fast, I didn't find that to be the case. I think there is a good speed variation between 1 and 5 that meets the need for light mixing. If I have more demanding requirements, I pull out the Kitchenaid stand mixer. In my opinion, its a good buy. I also like the red color!

It's a beautiful equipment, but I thought with all the good review it would be amazing. The highest speed was more like a medium speed, there wasn't enough speed for my meringue. So I felt my $10 hand mixer did a better job.

I have a big CuisineArt stand mixer for making 6 pounds of heavy bread dough, so I know what it's like to have a mixer with low torque. There must be two different versions of this hand mixer, judging by the reviews here. MY hand mixer does have a very low speed. I frequently use just one blade at a time, in a mini-bowl just slightly larger in diameter than the blade; not only can I mix dry powder into a thick sauce on the low speed without powder fluffing out, but I can even beat the stuff on the higher speeds without having sauce fly out. I don't know what to make of this. I almost didn't buy the mixer because of these kinds of complaints from reviewers, but since a lot of people seemed really happy with their mixers I took the chance.

However, I don't think this mixer can handle cookie dough. I've never met a hand mixer that could, so that's not a surprise. This mixer is for things like cake batter, frosting, gravy, and bearnaise sauce. My primary use for it is diy lotions and creams, and it is perfect for those.

I did a lot of shopping for my hand mixer. My top priority was blades that wouldn't rust or flake chrome off them and that could be washed in the dishwasher. When the mixer arrived and I found that the blades did pass my requirements, I ordered several replacement blades. I use the mixer every couple of days at least, so the blades are always dirty in the dishwasher. The blades are quite excellent--no uncessary seams, very clean and smooth design, and no rust or flaking. The blades alone make the mixer worth the extra cost.

One thing that I don't like about the blades is that they are not square. This means that stuff gets left in the edge of a bowl that is not dome-shaped.

I really like that this mixer has a lower speed, so that I can mix in ingredients without them spraying everywhere. However, the upper speed on this mixer just isn't powerful enough for any kind of a stiffer batter. I like the aesthetics of the mixer. Disappointed overall because it isn't going to be my go-to mixer for everything.

If I could give this 0 stars, I would. This is a cheaply made mixer. I expected so much more from this brand! I had a hand-held kitchenaid mixer that lasted for about 15 years (LOTS of use with thick cookie dough). I guess I expected the same kind of quality from this, but I was very disappointed.

Pros:
-It looks pretty.

Cons:
-There isn't much variety in the speeds - they all seem fast to me.

-You can't really see it in the picture, but the beaters are not as round as they should be (thus, spewing batter/dough all over the place constantly.

-Speaking of the beaters, there is no guard where the beaters snap in to the unit. So dough creeps up in to the unit when you are mixing it. It is a PAIN to clean - I would have to get out toothpicks to try to scrape the dough out of the holes in the mixer. Design fail #1!

-The button for changing the speed is very close to your hand. So while mixing, my hand would often slip and accidentally knock up the speed when I wouldn't want it to. Once again, splattering dough or flour everywhere. Design fail #2.

-The stupid thing started smoking (burned out motor) after only about 5 or 6 light uses.

Overall, this has a very weak motor and is a horrible design. I am sad to say that Kitchenaid really let its customers down with this product. I will be purchasing a different brand to replace this burned-out mixer.
