A Little Longer If you have a preferred brownness setting but would like to toast something "a little longer", you can do so at the touch of a button, without changing your favorite setting. Timeless Design Inspired by the 1937 redesign of our iconic Stand Mixer, the Pro Line® Series will make a statement on any countertop. Automatic Lift and Lower Mechanism The automatic lift and lower automatically lowers bread into the self–centering racks upon sensing bread in a slot, then lifts bread as soon as it has reached the selected shade. Extra–Wide 1.5 inch slots Extra–wide slots allow you to easily toast bread, bagels, and English muffins up to 11/8" (2.8 cm) thick. Self–centering racks help ensure even heating of thin or thick breads. An automatic lift mechanism raises and lowers racks. Removable Crumb Tray The removable crumb tray slides out for quick removal of crumbs. This allows you to keep the unit clean and sanitary. The crumb tray is hand–wash only. Keep Warm Function If the food is not removed within 45 seconds of the end of a cycle, the toaster will automatically lower the food and activate a "Keep Warm" cycle using low heat for up to 3 minutes. The KEEP WARM indicator will light while this cycle is active. You can cancel this cycle at any time by pressing TOAST/CANCEL. 7 Shade Settings 7 Shade Settings allow you to choose precisely how light or dark you want your toast. TOAST/CANCEL button Allows you to end the toast cycle simply.

Oh but do I ever love this toaster. It is one of those completely irrational purchases. There is nothing about this that is worth this much money. And yet, I really really love this toaster.
Now you can sort of justify the purchase - oh I mean rationalize it - the toaster has a full 5 year warranty. If anything goes wrong with it during that time, KitchenAid will ship you a new one and give you a prepaid shipping label. OK, so now the thing really only cost $60 a year. That's a little better.
Oh and then pick one of these up. They weigh a ton. They feel like high quality products used to feel - big and heavy and well built.
And then the color - we opted for the candy apple red. Yeah, it looks so incredibly cool on the table or counter. And it does look a lot like our KitchenAid stand mixer from thirty years ago - even though that is white.
And the geek in me loves this toaster. You almost have to see it work to fall in love with it. The lever on the front adjusts the amount of toasting you want. 4 was a great number for two slices of regular old multigrain sliced bread. Now place the two slices (or one if that's all you want) in the toaster. The toast glides down silently into the toaster. You don't press any buttons, just put the toast in and it automatically glides into the machine.
While the toast is working there is a bank of LED lights just above the darkness knob. The LEDs are lit up to where the knob is adjusted and the flashing light counts down as the toast is heated. Once the toast is finished, there is a beautiful just the right volume chime that tells you the toast is finished. Now the motor silently glides the toast up. If you don't take the toast out within 45 seconds, the toast glides back down and is kept inside on the keep warm cycle for up to 3 minutes.
If you want a little more char on your toast, press the little more time button. The machine will either extend the time (if it is in the middle of toasting) or it will glide the toast back down into the machine (if the toast is finished).
There is a bagel and a frozen setting.
That was where I fell in love, all that quiet gliding up and down, the just the right volume chime, and the LED lights. It's just fun to make toast.
There is one down side to the toaster - yeah really cheap ones tend to do this and this expensive beast doesn't do it. There is no push the toast up higher to get it out of the toaster button. That means small stuff is harder to get out of the toaster. English muffins are just on the slightly small side. The top opening is really large and it is easy to get a pair of chop sticks or silicone tongs in to pull out the toast (better not use all metal tongs, remember what your mother told you, never stick a knife into a toaster).
You don't need this toaster. Nope, you don't need to spend this much money on a toaster. But gosh darn it sure is beautiful and fun to use. If you make one outrageous purchase, this is worth it. And you've got that 5 year warranty.
The toaster was purchased on Amazon as a "refurbished" unit for two hundred bucks which is very reasonable. It arrived in new like condition and packaging with absolutely no sign of use. I even had to ask myself what the refurbish was all about...
The features are, honestly, on a toaster (of any kind), regardless of price. Every Dollar spent on this is worth its value. From the build quality to what it does and how it does it, everything is from another world. There was/is a comment from a dude who claims to "have seen" it in his sister's home, but it's too expensive... You need to OWN it before you speak about how sour grapes are :). You can custom do your toast from dedicated toast bread, to specialty breads to beagles, to naan, to rolls to whatever you want and it will be PERFECT regardless if it was at room temperature on out of the fridge or freezer. Trust me, it's second to nothing on the market today. Price tag... If all I said up to here is not a reason for you to jump on this toaster, than you must be in a wrong market, sorry; this is the Mercedes of toasters, period!
Aesthetically, I love its appearance and it fits perfectly out on the counter top. I understand that for some the design alone doesn't justify it, and true as this maybe for some, when I am up and about in the few minutes to myself in the morning, I like how it fits in with the kitchen.
I must say I do like the automatic lowering / mechanical lift, and that elevator ding sound that it makes as it lowers and raises the toast. From grate to grate it is 1 1/4 an inch thick so if you plan on shoving down a super fat bagel, it may get stuck but since I don't toast bagels in it, I am pretty ok with the thickness it permits.
Once your toast is done it will give it 45 seconds after it pops up. Then it will lower and run a continuous warming cycle for up to 3 minutes. So when you return to the toaster, you can hit cancel any time to grab your toast and it will still be warm.
And if you are slightly distracted like me even after a few cycles the outer surface stays cool to touch so you wont be accidentally burning yourself in the morning.
Overall I enjoy this purchase and if it holds up well enough over time it would have been worth the money
