KitchenAid replied and told me the insert is available $36.99 plus shipping on their website. They also informed me that there isn't really an issue with the cracking insert. They did suggest that anything put into the insert must be room temperature before turning it on(nothing frozen)and sufficient liquid needed to be added as well. I am not able to find the part number on their website. (8212302G)
Bottom line, I'm a very disappointed customer. I spent over $100 on this slow cooker and used it a handful of times. Now, I am faced with replacing it entirely or purchasing another insert for $70 somewhere else since it's NOT on the KitchenAid website.
I do not recommend the KitchenAid slow cooker.
I purchased this slow cooker as a replacement for my 15 year-old 3 Qt. CrockPot, which had performed admirably, but was too small for many dishes. Also, I had some concern about the health safety of its plastic lid. The KitchenAid's 6 Qt. size, glass lid, ceramic insert, and attractive stainless steel finish were all positives for me.
After trying out my first dish -- cheeseburger soup with diced potatoes and carrots -- here are my observations about the Kitchenaid Slow Cooker:
-- The controls are easy to figure out
-- The ceramic pot tended to wiggle in the metal base
-- The lid has a rubber (or plastic?) strip that seems to keep steam from escaping when cooking; however, this strip came off while I was washing the lid and required a little bit of effort to thread it back on.
-- The unit gave off a "new Slow Cooker smell" during its first use. Hopefully, this will go away after multiple uses.
-- The hinged lids have springs, so their natural unlocked state is up. If the purpose is to keep heat from escaping, and one wishes to leave utensils in the pot when serving, a lid which stays down would seem to make more sense.
-- The slow cooker tended to cook my potatoes and carrots unevenly. In the case of my dish, the recipe called for a cook time of 3-4 hours on low with no stirring. Although my soup's total cooking time was 3 1/2 hours, I'd say roughly half of my half-inch diced potatoes still had a fair amount of crunch to them, while the other half were pretty close to cooked.Read more ›
