I love to bake - cookies, cakes, breads. Proper baking requires proper equipment and I will go ahead and say that every home cook or baker needs one of these on the counter top.
This mixer has a 5 quart glass bowl. The bowl twists into a holder at the base of the mixer. Since this one is glass, it has a non-glass connector on the bottom to prevent breaks.
My previous KitchenAid was a 325 watt Artisan model. This one does not say Artisan on the housing like my old one and the model number is different. My old one was KSM150PSER. This one is KSM105GBCMC. Note the last two digits refer to the color (ER = Empire Red, MC = Metallic Chrome, etc.)
This mixer has less power then the Artisan at only 300 watts. It comes with a dough hook, a wire whip and a flex edge beater.
There is a power hub which allows you to attach all sorts of KitchenAid accessories. I use the pasta maker, juice squeezer and meat grinder.
You might be wondering what happened to my old mixer. Well, I decided to bake my way through the French Cullinary Institute bread baking course. I should have known better but some of their techniques and breads require commercial machinery (not to mention commercial ovens), not a household mixer. I didn't burn the motor out on the Artisan but I did damage some internal mechanisms that keep the tilt head locked into place. It makes a terrible noise now when I am mixing things.
This serves as a good warning to bread bakers. This 300w model will be insufficient for serious bread makers. I would worry about the wattage as well as the torque creates when mixing stiff doughs and the efefcts on the connector attached to the glass bowl. There have been instances on my Artisan where using a dough hook on a bread recipe would cause the metal bowl to get stuck on the base. You wouldn't want to go banging on the glass bowl at all. If you are a bread baker, consider the KitchenAid NSF series which have serious power.
Speaking of the glass bowl, it has its pros and cons. On the pro side, it is aesthetically pleasing and has a convenient pour spout. On the con side, it is breakable and heavy. Washing it in your sink is where most of the damage might take place. It is so heavy and bulky that you could end up tapping it against something and breaking it. I actually prefer the metal bowl.
One thing I dislike about the KSM105GB model is the inability to use a pour shield. The pour shield does more than just help you pour in ingredients. Try making whipped cream without one. You will end up with heavy cream splattered all over.
For normal or moderate usage, this would be a great mixer. It would be ideal for everyday mixing tasks - cake mixes, cookies, smaller bread recipes, whipping egg whites or making whipped cream, frostings, etc. With the right accessories, you can do a whole lot more. I use it to grind my own sausage, make homemade pasta and squeeze juices from oranges and grapefruits when my trees are ready.
I must reiterate - you will not regret buying one of these and every kitchen should have a stand mixer. Get the Artisan series (or higher) if you need more power. For standard tasks, this is sufficient and will last many years as long as you don't try to overload it.
-First off, this can mix bread dough but if you make a lot of bread, get a bigger mixer. It will struggle & jump around on your counter.
-I made a batch of chocolate chip cookies & it was fine but I think the traditional beater works better for cookie dough with chips or nuts in it. Nuts/chips will break down the rubber over time. KA really should include the traditional beater for those kinds of batter. I have all my old beaters from past KA's so that's what I will use.
-The flex beater works great with cake batter. Time will tell if it holds up. It is definitely not going to be as long-lasting as the traditional beater. I had one of the off-brand scraping beaters with my Artisan. I made sure my bowl clearance was right, etc. but that thing broke off in pieces within 6 months - nothing like going through your batter looking for bits of silicone…. I threw it out.
-I like the look, the measuring marks, the handle, etc. with a glass bowl. But I think I will always prefer the stainless for durability.
-The "Metallic Chrome" is beautiful & will look good in many kitchens. Pretty colors is what KA does best. I wish they would focus more on quality.
If you do large batches (cakes, cookies, etc), get a bigger mixer. This model is really not designed for big batch baking.
The fit/finish of this mixer is kind of cheap. The metallic paint is a little swirly in places & the metal logo ring & the metal ring around the rotary beater area does not fit really flush like my old mixer. Also, The bowl does not lock & turn smoothly; I have to wrangle it in. I took the bowl to a friend's KA & it went in smoothly. So it's not the bowl & it's not me, it's the metal part on the machine itself. It's not glaring & won't affect mixing but to me, it is just another sign of KA cutting corners. It makes me wonder about the parts I can't see.
So far it is holding up & I am not having the problems I had with my Artisan: Leaking oil, screw constantly loosening at the tilt head & junky gears/low power. Time will tell.
*Update 3/24/2016: Today I decided to try bread dough. I made a really easy quick bread - "Cook's Illustrated Easy Sandwich Bread". It's one loaf & the salt is not added until the very end so should be easy on this mixer. Salt makes dough seize up so it is a good idea to add at the end of a bread dough - factory bakeries do this too.
Well, the mixer head bounced up/down nearly from the start, loosening the lock latch on its own. It didn't come completely unlatched but I had to hold my hand & push down on the head while it was mixing. I didn't want to damage the machine & figured it would get damaged if I left it on its own. This is a very wet dough so should not be that much of a challenge for this mixer but it was.
So kind of mixed feelings for me. Yes, it mixed the dough & didn't get so hot that the motor cut out, did not leak oil & the head attaching pin did not slide out but the head should not be loosening in the locked position. This is EASY bread dough - 1 loaf, 13 ounces of flour. If I had made a traditional dough (less liquid) I think it would have met its limit. If you don't plan to make bread, maybe that won't matter to you.
-I'm still having the problems with the bowl not going in to the metal receiver ring easily.
the Pros: Its a Kitchen Aid. All Kitchen Aid products are well made and great quality. Clear Glass mixing Bowl with handle. You are able to see if all of the ingredients are mixing completely. There is no ingredients that is left at the bottom of the the bowl, The attachments scrapes the entire bowl while mixing. A very heavy well made mixer. You don't have to worry about the mixer shaking across the table. The Bowl lock in place. This mixer makes great cakes and the thickest frosting in no time. I wish I can afford two. I paid an awesome price for this.
The Cons. No shield protector. The ingredients fly out of the bowl on fast speed. Never-the-less you can order an Kitchen Aid that come with an attachment shield. I like my mixer alot! I hope it continue to give me the quality service for a long time.
