The flex edge beater is designed to be used in stainless steel mixer bowl not the ice cream bowl. It is the only beater that KitchenAid makes that scrapes the sides of your bowl when you are making batter or other things. Once you mix your batter then you simply put the batter into your ice cream maker and let it run a little and then put it in the freezer and you will have your ice cream to indulge in. This worked great the first time, and was pretty easy to set up. However I've used it a second time and the top piece of the assembly cracked and now it's useless. I followed all the instructions to a T. I find it ridiculous that the top piece is made of plastic.
