This is truly the most ingenious mallet I have ever had. The handle is a tad longer than the vintage one I had been using for decades, which gives it better balance with its slightly larger and heavier head. That balance means that it is not going to be as fatiguing to use, important to those of us who are not as young as we once were. Even better, it offers four different sides for tenderizing--from plain flat to deeply textured. That gives it more versatility too, and with the handle for hanging, it's convenient.
Kitchen real estate is becoming much more important in the smaller, modern kitchen, and this is definitely a tool to have.
Just like with a well balanced hammer, the weight of the one piece cast stainless steel tenderizer does most of the work with minimal effort on the cook's part. The head of the tenderizer has three different sized nubby patterns plus one flat side for flattening a thicker piece of meat or making short work of pulverizing dry bread inside a plastic bag for bread crumbs. Or you could use it as a modern battle axe against an intruder...
Some tenderizers have large round cast aluminum disks mounted to a wooden handle via a screw that keeps coming loose. This design is terrible in that you can't tenderize or flatten close to a bone. This new Kitchenaid solves that problem with its small but heavy and SQUARE head. No more half raw bone-in pork chops due to uneven thickness of the meat, you can flatten it to uniform thickness.
The cast head and shaft are one piece and are inserted in a thicker handle which has highly polished caps and a half-ring cutout at the end in case you like to hang up your tools. The grip itself has some kind of plastic coating in Kitchenaid's signature wine red color. Stainless steel is cold, and this makes it more comfortable to hold. But the seams between the high polished caps and the plastic also make for potential bacteria traps. I would have preferred function over looks here. Nothing a spritz with a bleach solition can't cure, but they could have made the perfect tenderizer if they had forfitted the prettier looks.
This weighs over a pound, and is well made. I highly recommend this meat mallet.
It's Easy to Clean, Easy to Store, Easy to Use, Excellent Quality, Comfortable Size, Heavy Weight
The design eliminates the obvious weak spot--there is no seam between the shaft and tenderizer end until half-way up where the red and chrome handle is attached. The only improvement I would make is the addition of a rubberized or silicone-style coating on the handle to prevent the hand slipping when wet. And, perhaps the handle could also be designed in a more ergonomic manner to avoid hand fatigue.
Dishwasher safe and the meat tenderizer features an integrated hanging loop. This basic kitchen tool is substantial and the quality in materials used and workmanship is obvious. It should last for years.
