The story has easy to understand concepts. Kitty was happy being the only family pet. She had delicious food and a good deal of attention from her family. However, Digger the dog comes to live with the family and takes some of the spotlight away from Kitty. She does not like the competition. For awhile she acts spiteful and punishes Digger by taking his food etc. Then she learns to accept Digger and has fun playing and sharing with him.
This is a lesson that can apply to a new baby taking some of the attention away from a small child. Jealousy on the part of the child is common. There is an adjustment period and, hopefully, acceptance.
The author’s colorful illustrations are simple but follow the events of the story well.
Small children should relate to the story and illustrations and want the book read over and over again.
We meet a family – Danny and Annie, their two children Millie and baby Max and Kitty, their cat. Kitty had it made – great food a cat door to come and go as she wished, warm spots to nap, and playtime with Millie and Max. But then Digger the dog comes to stay and Kitty found herself in competition with all the things she valued, sharing the home with Digger. Unhappy with the circumstances Kitty decides to get even – hiding Digger’s toys, eating his biscuits, getting him into trouble. But her deeds did not alter Digger’s behavior, so Kitty found a new daytime home down the street, returning only for dinner – which she gorged on both her food and Digger’s and grew very fat and lazy. She was so fat she couldn’t access the cat door and finally realized Digger was an OK dog and the two become friends in sharing.
This is fine new children’s book, well deigned and with a story that is easy to follow and holds many learning concepts for children. Looks like Belinda Beeck is here to stay! Grady Harp, May 16
Children love animals, they simply can't resist a story with any kind of animal, and sometimes it's easier to talk about sad or difficult subjects using them instead.
Kitty lives a perfect life until the Digger shows up. She tries to find solutions to her problem until she understands that he's part of the family.
With this book, my students and I could talk about jealousy, envy, the arrival of a new family member, selfishness, introduce the family member's vocabulary (ESL class), pet's vocabulary and kitty's diet.
The art is simple but effective. Some pages have good design. The text is part of the picture, although it's not dynamic or part of the illustration. Digger arriving is a very interesting page, like we're looking out of the window.
It is this story, Kitty lived with a nice family with two children and had all she wanted - food, comfort, play - until Digger the dog came to stay. Kitty felt that Digger interfered with everything she liked to do.
So Kitty began to trick and annoy Digger. But this did not make her happy. Then she decided to run away.
But then things changed.
