Interspersing Civil War history, Hemingway trivia, and sunken treasure, Kitty Hawk and the Hunt for Hemingway’s Ghost will take you on a reading vacation to the Keys. You will feel the unrelenting dry heat, marvel at the tropical fish, gaze across crystal-clear water as far as the eye can see, and feel as though you’re really there with Kitty as her sidekick and best friend as she puts the pieces together of the latest mystery in which she finds herself embroiled!
Once again, Iain Reading captures an authentic sense of place and merges it with fascinating history and entertaining storytelling.
I was curious to see how the author was going to prepare us for Kitty's around-the-world trip. I was a little worried that Kitty wasn't ready for this enormous undertaking and was relieved to see all the precautions and preparation that Kitty and her family put into place before her trip. The mini GPS maps really help to locate where she is on her flight path. I googled a lot of the information I read in the book just to be sure she would be alright. Her plane is a lot bigger than I thought and the extra fuel tanks will help her on her long haul flights. I learned so much about geography, aviation, travel and literature as I read this book (and if you are interested to learn more, there is a mini encyclopedia at the end).
Kitty's sense of adventure is contagious and I will be following her as she heads off to Iceland in her next book. Where's my backpack?
What I love about the Kitty Hawk books is the fact that there is no romance. It really is a breath of fresh air to read a young adult novel without an ounce of romance. These books focus on the adventure, which I personally love. If romance isn’t your thing, I definitely recommend giving the Kitty Hawk series a shot.
Kitty Hawk is courageous, intelligent, and a bit curious and nosy as well. I really enjoy having her as the main character. She is all about adventure and learning new things along with making new friends. She is also extremely moral. If she sees something fishy going on, she is going to investigate and then do the right thing to set everything straight.
Along with the adventure of the story, there is a lot of historical facts and stories thrown in. I really love reading a fiction book that teaches me something. While I am reading an adventure fiction book, there is also a lot of interesting and true facts thrown in. You can really see how much time, effort, and research Iain Reading puts into all of his novels. It really is impressive. At the end of the book he lists an array of reading materials that will give you more information on any of the history that was discussed in the book. I really think this a nice touch.
Overall, this was a great addition to the Kitty Hawk adventure series. I was entertained throughout the whole book and learned a bunch about shipwrecks. I think the best thing I am able to compare this book series to would be Scooby Doo. Kitty is always trying to solve some sort of mystery just like the gang in Scooby Doo. If you enjoy watching Scooby Doo, I really think you will enjoy this as well. I am giving this book a rating of 4 out of 5 stars!
Thank you to Iain Reading and to Kelsey Butts from Book Publicity Services for sending me a copy of this book in return for an honest review.
