Mick O'brien and Caoimhín ó Raghallaigh have made what is one of the finest Irish music records of not only recent but of all times.

The pipe-and-fiddle due play Irish music (jigs, reels and a couple of hornpipes) the way it was meant to be heard-- with no guitars or drums cluttering the mix, subtly, making the tunes entirely new. The title track is stunning; others, such as the superb Mullin's Fancy, reimagine these tunes and will lend a whole new set of ears to musicians and non-musicians alike.

The pair's genius here is to bring out the tunes'many inflections without adding junk to the tunes, or relying on speed or effects, to bring out the subtleties. I imagine that this record, like the Bothy Band recordings, will become cannonical. Essential.

Quite simply, this CD offers Irish traditional music as it ought to be played. The choice of tunes reflects a deep knowledge of the repertoire, and the performances are tasteful, expert, and inspiring. The music wears very well; this CD is still in heavy rotation in my house after at least two years. An easy desert-island choice.

I discovered these guys several years ago while listening to RTE radio via the web and instantly fell in love with their playing. They take the music at an easy pace and have a groove that just won't quit. I found this CD not long thereafter and it remains one of the most-listened-to recordings that I own. It wears extremely well and is a wonderful antidote to the school of Irish music that seems to feel that fast and furious is the way to go.

This dynamic duo rocks out in a fiddly pipie kind of way. The kitty doesn't just lie over, it is bowled over by the illest pipe cords slash fiddle combos. The rhythm is awesome. If you like the "Deadly Buzz", you will like this CD (and vice versa).

At first I found the sound to be a little too raw, maybe because I am not as experienced with Irish Trad, but after a few listens, I am in love with the album, exactly for being raw, without any unnecessary polishing, pure trad!

This album shouldn't be missed by any trad lover!
