I have been ordering that particular brand for a year and really liked it. And now the last shipment is a different taste and color from the previous shipments. I do not know if it from a different country or grower , but it is definitely not the same anymore . So 1 star only. and also because the content of Cadmium is not indicated, I learned a lot recently on consumerlab.com it is very toxic to kidneys, Many popular cocoa powders and some dark chocolates are contaminated with high levels of cadmium, a toxic heavy metal. So Beware it is a toxic heavy metal linked to kidney damage, cardiovascular disease, skin disorders and more. Fortunately, cadmium tolerance in humans is much higher than lead tolerance, which is why California Prop 65 allows more than 800% more cadmium than lead. switch to Baker's Unsweetened Chocolate Baking Bar - 4oz cheap and safe, Milk chocolate with below 30% total dry cocoa solids must contain no more than 0.10 mg/kg wet weight of cadmium,Chocolate with over 30% cocoa and below 50% must have no more than 0.30 mg/kg of cadmium!! The EU has set a TWI (tolerable weekly intake) limit for cadmium of 2.5 µg/kg body weight and says dietary exposure among European consumers is close to or exceeding the limit.

My #1 choice for cacao powder is Kiva!

Having tried 3 different major brands of raw/organic cacao powder so far, this is my hands down favorite. I'm not sure how or why, but the Kiva has the deepest, richest, and overall best taste to me. I have cut processed sugars out of my diet and this cacao powder actually has a very naturally sweet taste to me - with no added sweetener. So delicious when added to a smoothie with frozen fruit and a good helping of greens - makes a delicious but totally healthy treat. I start every single morning with a green smoothie, which includes a mixture of RO water w/trace minerals added, turmeric root, raw red beets, a mix of organic spinach, kale, and chard, cacao powder, glutamine powder, Kiva moringa leaf powder, hydrolyzed collagen powder, chia seeds, banana, and frozen strawberries and blueberries. Nutritionally packed but delicious! I do have to say, price-wise it is more expensive than the other cacao powder I use regularly - Viva Labs (especially with Subscribe and Save). So, when I'm pinching my pennies, I do cheat on Kiva and use Viva Labs in my smoothies to reap that cost savings. But for applications where I want the rich chocolate flavor of the cacao powder to shine (aka anything but green smoothies) - I'm picking Kiva.

Some of those other applications have been healthy chocolate brownies (made with coconut oil and coconut flour, yum) and hot cocoa with a little bit of honey which is divine! Or a more simple smoothie with just fruit and cacao powder. One day I really want to try mixing this cacao with melted coconut oil and making chocolate covered strawberries!

This stuff is wonderful. I've long had a healthy chocolate addiction that is usually satisfied with relatively costly super-dark chocolate bars. I don't know why it took me so long to get pure cocoa powder. This stuff adds a rich chocolate flavor to whatever you want. I put it in my coffee, cereal, etc... or sometimes make a very dark, thick mixture with 2-3 TBS of this stuff in a few ounces of lightly sweetened whole-milk yogurt.

All in all, I now have the freedom and flexibility to feed my chocolate addiction with large or small doses of pure cocoa any time I want! I'll be buying this again.

Update 4/10/22 - I’m not sure if the folks at Kiva have made a change to their formulation but something is different about the last 2 bags I received in my Subscribe & Save orders - the organic cacao powder dissolves much easier and there are fewer “chunks”. Both are welcome enhancements and I’ve upped my rating from 4 to 5 stars. Well done!

I’ve tried the Kiva Raw Organic Cacao Powder in both hot and cold preparations and it’s tough to manage, (for me), when it’s cold. It never fully dissolves and won’t combine with stevia or other products when cold. When it’s put in hot beverages or cereal - another story all together. This stuff is A M A Z I N G❗️ The cacao flavor is rich, not bitter and there’s no after taste. Coffee & Chocolate are my absolute favorite thing right now. The bag it comes in seals well and is sturdy enough to stand up for months of opening and closing. I didn’t receive a warning label like some others did and I’m not sure it would matter if I did🛎

Quite seriously, I am crazy about this product. I bought it primarily to mix in a huge teaspoonful with my cup of coffee, with an ounce of milk and a big dash of organic cinnamon.
I'm trusting that the fine ingredients listed on the package are true, including no sugar.
It yields a wonderfully mellow cup of coffee.
I had never tried it before but am going to reorder shortly.
I like the size of the package, too. It will last a while and it has one of those good press-shut reseals.

Fantastic flavor, but the cadmium :(

The flavor of Kiva cacao is amazing. I taste tested about 15 different organic powders to find the right flavor for a great mocha, and this one topped it. I was buying about 4lbs a month. However as other reviewers have noted, this powder is very high in cadmium. I contacted Kiva about this but got no response. I was loathe to change cacao, as I had found the perfect flavor. However I really don’t want to wind up with kidney damage.

I ran another taste test today, and I found (as did another reviewer, that the Kiva powder did cause my throat to swell and become congested. Sadly I’m done with Kiva, but the good news is I found a great tasting cacao and a great brand. I’ll list my results below for anyone interested. Some of these might not be sold on Amazon.

Wilderness Family Naturals Fermented Cacao:
Smooth and dark, tastes almost the same as Kiva.

Wilderness Family Naturals Non-Fermented Cacao:
Similar to Fermented, but a little more bitter, but not acidic/tangy like the last two

Terrasoul Raw Cacao Powder:
Very bitter/acidic/tangy, not good

Wild Chocolate Powder:
Bitter/acidic/tangy, less than Terrasoul, but not bad

Normally I love this cacao powder. I have ordered this brand several times and it has been great. This last batch I recieved, which was purchased at the end of December 2018, is grey, gritty and awful. It has the colour, texture, and taste of dirt. If anyone purchased this item in December 2018 and has a bag with Lot Number 087018, Expiry Date 11/2021 you may also have a bad bag.

Nice smooth rich flavour without any bitter, burnt aftertaste. I make my own hot cocoa mix because any commercial product has far too much sugar. In fact, being diabetic, I use no sugar when I make hot cocoa for myself . When I make it for my grandchildren, I only use half a teaspoon of sugar per cup of milk and my grandchildren and I love this product. It makes wonderful hot cocoa or cold chocolate milk. The kids request every time they come over. I love that it is organic,non GMO and minimally processed at low temperatures. If it were to be certified "Fair Trade", then it would be a perfect product

I really like it’s taste and intensity.

Keep it in mind that this is not “instant sweet chocolate”. This is cacao powder. It won’t be fully powdered (you have to break a few pieces of chocolate) and it won’t dissolve easily on hot chocolate.

My tip: I warm up half inche of milk (almond milk in my case) and I dissolve/break the blobs of chocolate in just a little bit of hot milk. Then I add the remaining milk, warm up the rest, and stir it. Done. 😋

Important: Note that as per the date of this review (Oct 30, 2016) the nutritional info (picture) is wrong. The serving shows 2.5g when in fact is 2.5tbsp (i.e. 14g). The servings per container is correct (i.e. 454g/14g=32). The package I received however shows it correctly.

Excellent package (resealable and durable) although be careful when cutting it open as the resealable section may be opened and powder may have displaced all the way to the top (i.e. section to be cut). Happened to me so kinda made a mess in my kitchen. Easy fix though, just tamp it upright against a flat surface few times to make sure the powder on the top drops. Then cut it open.

This is my first time trying pure cacao powder so I can't really comment on the quality. I bought it as a replacement to coffee to make "bullet proof cacao" (I follow a LCHF diet) as my body doesn't really tolerate caffeine. Info about cacao benefits all well known, there is a reason why is called "The food of the Gods". Kudos Mother Nature!

This is the Criollo variant and tastes great to me. Others are: Forestero, Trinitario and Aromica which I haven't tried. If all the label says is true this is a great product I'll stick with (i.e. non GMO; 100% pure; low processing temperature which keeps keeps delicate vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants intact; no added sugar).

Lastly, very affordable and happy is part of the Amazon's Prime line of products although it would be great if Amazon could include it into the Subscribe & Save line of products.

All in all, highly recommended.

I read the reviews and thought the taste must be AMAZING! I guess I bought the product with high expectations and that's why I got a bit disappointed; hence the four stars :) It's an ok product but not amazing ;) I've used it in smoothies and for hot chocolate and it's fine. Don't like the taste when I add it directly to my milk though. Was very good for brownies. It did give me headaches though when I had it every day like all other chocolate does.
