- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2021I am an owner of several higher end knives from Japanese forges (Makoto Kurosaki, Toshihiro Wakui and so on), and this knife is by no means the same level of production, it's not a particularly impressive steel, it doesn't have nearly the same hours of work put into it as those, but this is not a high end knife, this is a 10 dollar knife.
With all that said, I was actually pleasantly surprised by this knife. The knife is overall lightweight, the handle is a lightweight wood with a half-tang construction which ends up tipping the balance point towards the blade itself, this makes the knife more suitable for a pinch grip (for those less experienced, this is a good thing)
The fit and finish was surprisingly good as well, neither the spine, nor choil has particularly sharp edges, making the pinch grip very comfortable for a 10 dollar knife. While the handle is reasonably fitted to the blade.
Cutting performance is really exceptional for such a low-pricepoint knife, it is by no means exceptional, but the blade is significantly thinner than that of European style knives, this means the blade geometry will make the knife better at cutting soft produce. In order to compensate for the thinness, the steel is not hardened to a very high HRC (probably around 56 I'd say), this means that the edge retention is not particularly good, this knife will need frequent honing if you want to maintain the out-of-the-box sharpness, this is the same as with most low-mid end knives. That said, this knife is so thin and soft that honing is actually quite enough to maintain a decent edge, you will not need to sharpen this knife if you are otherwise used to European knives. And because of the blade geometry, this knife will still cut quite well even when dull.
It should be noted that this knife is NOT intended to handle the same workloads as thicker blades of equal or lesser hardness would. This is absolutely not a knife meant for hard produce such as bones. It is purely a vegetable and filet knife, which it does better than any other knife in this price bracket, from my experience.
Overall, this is an expectational knife for the price. Personally, I grab this knife whenever I just want to do a quick prep without performing the ritual of care that high-end knives require. But I can imagine that if you don't otherwise have a high-end Japanese-style knife, this knife can easily become your favorite knife for vegetables and fileting.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2020I am a pastry chef and having been using this as my every day knife for 2 years now. I bought it on recommendation from a colleague and have not been disappointed! This knife is lightweight, well balanced, and comfortable. I have tried many of my colleagues knives all at varying price points, and while some of them were a little better or could be used for more things, I just can't bring myself to spend that much money on a knife.
This knife arrives really sharp and has maintained that edge fairly well over the two years I have had it. I can count on one hand how many times I have had to sharpen it on a wet stone. I do use a steel to hone the blade everytime I use it, and if I'm doing a lot of. Slicing and dicing I may hone it multiple times. Just a couple pulls on each side and it can slice through tomatoes ease and cut herbs without bruising them.
The blade is a little thin for cutting anything that is too hard, like a block of chocolate, but I have a larger, sturdier knife for things like that. But for an everyday knife to chop fruits, veggies, and some meats, it gets the job done. You will not find a better knife for the money. And everyone of my co-workers who have tried it out cannot believe that it cost me less than $10.
I have 2 other Kiwi knives as well, and while this one is my favorite because of the size and utility, they are also of equal quality and have maintained an edge with only one wet stone sharpening each. Kiwi has a customer for life in me!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2024If someone had told me that a $10 knife could be really good I'd have been very skeptical. But for $10 this may be the best kitchen knife I've ever owned. It came very sharp and seems be holding its edge very well. The shape and balance is superb and the handle is very comfortable and gives a good grip. Since getting this it is my goto knife in the kitchen. And I honestly don't understand how they can make a knife this good & sell it for 10 bucks.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2022I generally buy high quality knifes but wanted to try my hand at a Santoku before sinking a lot of money into a good quality Santoku design, so this was a cheap way to try it. First about Kiwi knife - blade is very thin and flexes - need to be extra careful using it - , it was dull and arrived with a burr on one side, also there was a couple of small chips on the blade, metal is soft but I was able to sharpen it using 3200 stone and removed all the burr using ceramic rod, it’s now very sharp but metal is soft so it will require regular daily maintenance. If it didn’t have the chips and was sharp, I would give it 4stars, but for $10, it’s absolutely worth it! As for Santoku design, it’s a light general purpose design and it complements my 10” VG10 Chef knife (In my opinion it will not replace a Chef’s knife for an advanced home cook or a chef), and a Zwilling Twin Professional large set Ive had for 30 years that’s still going strong. As for the Zwilling professional set, design is excellent, 30 years ago the German steel was pretty good and had high relative hardness, today however, it’s just ok and is relatively soft but it’s multipurpose, takes a sharp edge, will require regular maintenance, but I know I won’t chip it going thru a bone by accident. I will buy another Kiwi but not as my primary knife!

6/10/24 Update
It’s funny but with all the great knives I have, I still find myself reaching for this knife instead of my expensive knives, that says a lot. Upping my rating to 4 stars.
As for my Zwilling professional western chef’s knife I’ve had for 30 years, I hardly ever use it, just sits in its block. I will never buy another thick blade western knife! Once you use a thin blade knife (slightly thicker than kiwi), you’ll never go back. The magic happens when you have a hard enough blade that holds an edge for a long time, won’t chip and you can sharpen without too much difficulty. Too hard and will hold edge for a long time but will chip and it’s hard to sharpen, too soft and requires sharpening every day but won’t chip.

Greg SandsReviewed in Canada on November 22, 20235.0 out of 5 stars Great knife
This is my third kiwi purchase (thin chef knife and steak/paring knifes) This one is thicker metal and I use it for cutting up meat. Easy to clean and keep sharp. Fantastic value.

tony gruleyReviewed in France on August 13, 20245.0 out of 5 stars J'adore !
Couteau vraiment pratique. Je cuisine beaucoup et je suis ravie de l'avoir. Seul bémol peut être est que la peinture sur le manche part... je le lave à la main.

VibiReviewed in Belgium on June 22, 20244.0 out of 5 stars Agréable en main et léger

Frithjof MohrReviewed in Germany on November 11, 20235.0 out of 5 stars Sehr gutes Alltagsmesser
Fazit:
Günstig, leicht, sehr scharf, super low-tech Messer!
Sehr zu empfehlen.
