I purchased this item wanting to make a difference on the planet. I wanted to go Green. Instead, what I got was a very hefty bill and a potentially fatal accident. I put the Kiwi U-Powered Portable Solar Charger in the window of my vehicle like I done for about 2 days and went into a building for a few hours only to return to a cloud of smoke in my truck. I opened the door and smoke came rolling out. My leather seats, my beige interior roof was filled with Black Soot, on the dash board was a hole the size 2 golf balls. The Kiwi Charger EXPLODED in the sun and MELTED THRU my dash board and BURNED my windshield. The smell of burning plastic wreaked all thru out my truck. I called the Kiwi Choice home office and got no response for several days. I had to search for the owner Alia El Banna and finally got thru to her via LinkedIn. She had her sales person, ADAM, call me to work out repairs to my truck. He said it was not his fault, it was the manufactures fault. Well then Adam wanted me to find the cheapest person possible to fix my dash board. Every time I went to get an estimate he would never honor it. NOW I have been calling and leaving messages, emailing him for 2 months now and he will NOT return any of my calls or respond to any email.
My daughter sits in the passenger side of the truck all the time and this one day she did not come with me and I can not imagine if I were driving or if she were with me when this thing exploded. It could have been fatal. I explained this to the company rep and initially they seemed concerned but once I was urged to send back the product to them for testing and i did just that; His concern was gone because he now had the defective item in his hands.Read more ›
What I like:
It can recharge many devices without access to a PC or a power outlet. (obviously)
It has the capacity to fully recharge most portable devices.
It has a standard USB port.
It has four options to recharge it's battery. Solar, wall plug, car lighter and USB port.
It comes with a nice bag to carry everything in.
What I don't like:
Variety comes with a downside. Lots of little pieces that can be lost. Luckily those pieces have their own little bag.
The solar panels look weird, like stickers, and not quite centered.
It takes a LONG time to recharge this things internal battery.
It doesn't have a Zune adapter.(*keep reading!*)
The LG adapter fit pretty tight into my phone.
I purchased this to recharge a few different items this summer when camping. I was a bit disappointed that it didn't have an adapter for the Zune. But, as with most portable devices nowadays, my Zune came with a USB cable/adapter. Having a USB charging port on this device is a HUGE plus! Because it can recharge many other devices using the custom USB cables that come with them. I'm also disappointed with the amount of time it takes to recharge the internal battery, which is used to recharge your various devices. I knew that recharging it with the solar panels would take a while, but even recharging it in a wall plug took a long time. I topped off the charge from approximately a 50% charge via a wall plug the other day, and it took three hours to take the full charge.Read more ›
The only drawback is that the unit requires direct sunlight in solar mode. Although this requirement was noted in the directions, it's actually a literal requirement. The unit has to DIRECTLY face the sun in order to function/recharge in solar mode. We had it charging for several days in the sunlight and it never reached full charge. We had to plug the unit into a wall outlet to fully charge it.
I have other solar powered devices that function fully in indirect sunlight. I suggest that Kiwi do a little more product development to improve its solar cell efficiency.
