This is a good probiotic. I've used it for a while, but usually buy it from a company used to shipping supplements & probiotics. It says right on the label under storage that it has to be refrigerated. In the middle of near 100 degree heat this was just thrown in a box without any insulation or ice. When it arrived the heat sensitive bottle was almost to hot to pick up so it's ruined.

I had surgery and took a powerful antibiotic beforehand (Cephalexin 500 mg, one capsule four times a day). This antibiotic completely messed up my GI tract, stripped me of all my good bacteria, I was sick with heavy diarrhea for a couple of weeks, I finally got that under control with the help of a second specialized antibiotic and this product as recommended to me by an M.D. This stuff is awesome, worth the money if you need special help in your gut for any reason (and millions of people do). (You should also get yourself a probiotic called saccharomyces boulardii, which you buy separately, this product doesn't include it; take the s.b. for about 30 days max.) With regard to shipping issues - it's my understanding from the accompanying Klaire literature that the product is over-engineered to the point where it doesn't actually need to arrive at your house cold, it will retain its potency even if it's been out of the cold for a few days. (Klaire literature says, "....Klaire Labs probiotics will maintain their full potency for several weeks at room temperature without refrigeration....Tests on our products that have arrived at their destination warm....have verified that potency is not adversely affected.") I would assume Amazon has consulted with Klaire on this issue or vice versa. I really don't think Klaire would distribute through Amazon if problems were extant. Klaire says do refrigerate it when you get it. UPDATE: I called Klaire. They do not authorize the selling of their products on Amazon. They do not authorize third-party sellers to sell their stuff on Amazon. UPDATE: I've suffered two relapses since writing this. The condition that I have - c. difficile colitis, or c. diff for short - is a beast. Avoid it at all costs. It might ruin your life for months (or mess it up). One way to possibly avoid it (I emphasize "possibly") is, if you take antibiotics, take probiotics simultaneously, lots of 'em.

Here is a side-by-side comparison of ten leading probiotic supplements: InnovixLabs Multi-Strain Probiotic, Prescript-Assist, Garden of Life Raw Probiotics Ultimate Care 100 Billion, Ultra Jarro-Dophilus 50 Billion, LesLabs Probiotic 12+, Naturo Sciences Probiotics 15, Sedona Labs iFlora Multi-Probiotic, Klaire Labs Ther-Biotic Complete, VitaLife Nutrition Probiotics 5B, and Rainbow Light Probiolicious Gummies.

GENERAL DISCUSSION

Probiotic bacteria supplements are very popular, and for good reason. "Good bugs from yogurt" were once considered a solution to digestive issues like irregularity and nothing more. But we now know that gut health and the collection of healthy bacteria in our gut (called microbiome or gut flora) play key roles in several seemingly unrelated chronic diseases like obesity, allergies, rheumatoid arthritis, and depression.

Some specific types of probiotic bacteria strongly influence our mood - they help produce most of the neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine in the gut.

Other probiotic strains have been shown to reduce cholesterol. And yet others help ease colic in newborns.

We all have unique blends of probiotics in our guts. We get them from our mothers during birth and then through breastfeeding. After that, we get more from the environment (mostly dirt). By age three, our probiotic fingerprints are established, so it is critical that you expose to your kids to fermented foods, pets, probiotics, and yes, even dirt at an early age.

Children born via C-section, then fed formula, or given antibiotics, and raised in ultra clean homes have poor gut bacterial diversity.

My family uses a variety of probiotic brands, and I was curious which ones would pass a test of viability. I poured milk into five small glass bottles in order to test four brands and use the fifth bottle as an experimental control. I emptied the powder of several capsules of each brand into a bottle and stirred with a utensil (different utensil for each). I covered each bottle tightly with plastic wrap, secured with a rubber band. Twenty hours later, THIS Klaire Labs Ther-Biotic supplement has had the strongest reaction. It is the only one that developed the consistency of yogurt and noticeable air pressure under the plastic wrap. This successful reaction speaks not just to the manufacturer of the product, but also to the distributor and seller, since storage and shipping conditions can sabotage the viability of this kind of product. (The seller included thermal wrap and an ice pack when shipping :-) I am kind of stunned that one of the well-regarded brands that is supposed to be shelf stable (but I refrigerate) had no visible reaction during this experiment. The reaction by these Klaire Labs probiotcs was truly impressive, and I will be more confident in taking them when packaged properly to keep cool.
