Klean Kanteen has always been stainless. Before Klean Kanteen, hydration bottles were made from either polycarbonate plastic or aluminum. We now know that both those materials are associated with a host of diseases and illnesses, info that wasn't common knowledge in 2004 when Klean Kanteen released the first food-grade stainless bottle onto the market. But there were studies, even then, that worried us and caused us to doubt the safety of the existing bottles on the market. The founders of Klean Kanteen wanted to give health conscious people a safe alternative to plastic and aluminum. So the very first Klean Kanteen was made from high quality, 18/8, food-grade stainless steel–a metal superior in both strength and safety that contains no harmful chemicals or toxins. No BPA, phthalates, lead or toxins. Now all those other companies that started out making plastic or aluminum bottles are crowing about their new stainless bottles. We got it right the first time because health has always been our top priority.Features include: Eco-friendly, recyclable, durable, designed to last, reusable, refillable. Large mouth openings - fit ice cubes and other big items like frozen berries, easy to fill and pour, easy to hand-wash. 100% stainless threads - no plastic threads or liner. BPA-free caps - made of BPA-free polyproylene (pp #5), all caps have safe, toxin-free silicone seal. Rounded corners - rounded corners are easy to clean with no hard angles where dirt, germs or bacteria can stick. Flavor free - food-grade stainless steel we use doesn't need to be lined with plastic or baked-on epoxy like aluminum bottles, so you'll never have to check to make sure the inside of your Klean Kanteen is still safe and intact. Because our bottles don't have a liner, they don't retain flavors or make drinks taste funky either. Easy care and use - easy to clean, dishwasher safe (some products should be hand washed).

The first I tried was a Coleman model that had a flip up straw. The straw was plastic which is a bit self defeating because the whole purpose of buying a stainless steel water bottle was to avoid plastic. This was just the first one I had ever seen and I figured the plastic in the straw was better than an entire bottle of plastic. It worked well, but was difficult to clean, dented, and had plastic.
The second I tried was an inexpensive model bought off here that looks similar to this one but didn't come in any colors. It functions and cleans as easily as this but the problem was that it acquired a smell after a week or two of use, and I haven't been able to get rid of it after a year. I have tried soaking it and scrubbing it and anything else I can think of. The smell would not dissipate. This one also dented.
I purchased the Kleen Kanteen, which is fairly mainstream now several years after my original stainless steel bottle purchase. I chose the pink color and love it! The color is vibrant as pictured. The bottle functions very well. I love that you can upgrade the top to a water bottle style or a steel cap of the same shape that originally comes with it. Very smart. They also make baby bottles, toddler sip cups, and kid versions which are perfect for our family!
A caveat about stainless steel bottles: they dent. This is just the downside of the bottles. The denting rarely creates a problem with the functionality of the bottle. It is just the price to pay for not having plastic with possibly harmful chemicals, or glass that can shatter. A small price to me.
The plastic loop cap isn't hollow, so it's easy to clean (i.e., there aren't crannies that are hard to reach and clean). It doesn't leak, even without cranking down on it (unlike the Klean Kanteen Wide Insulated Bottle with Stainless Steel Loop Cap).
The OXO Good Grips Bottle Brush works perfectly for hand washing, but the "brushed stainless" version can go in the dishwasher without risk of damaging the paint.
Did I mention that it doesn't make my water taste funny?
The stainless seems to stay clean, no bad taste from the metal.
- loop lid takes almost 2 full turns to removed, which is fine for most and is more of a nitpick on my part as I work in an office and constantly have to open it and don't care for the sports bottle top.
I mostly use it for water but occasionally put Gatorade or some other soft drink in it. Removing the residual leftover drink is as simple as running some water through it, no getting out the dish soap and bottle scrubber to make sure everything it gone so your next batch of water doesn't taste like watered down Gatorade.
When I do clean this out must of the time I just squirt a little dish soap in with warm water and shake it with the top on then rinse it thoroughly. As that's about all the cleaning I think this thing really needs.
I would say if you are fairly active like I am go and spend the 3-5$ on a sports cap to make drinking out of this extremely easy instead of having to unscrew the three turns it takes to remove the original cap.
I have owned mine for about 9 months now and use it daily it has some dents from where I have dropped it an light scratches around the outside now but nothing very noticeable from the brushed stainless.
I love my klean canteen and have purchased my wife one and have another on the way. I use these more than my hydroflask
