Exceeds expectations in my top categories: nice design, a REAL spill proof lid, ease of operation, easy to clean, durable, long term hot/cold storage, and a company with a good mission.
The lid is absolutely spill proof (when in the closed position).
The lid can be opened/closed with one hand, but it takes a little bit of finesse and force.
(Wrap thumb and three fingers around sides of lid, use index finger to rotate tab).
It is durable, and well finished. It cleans easily, and the lid is uncomplicated.
Keeps morning coffee warm for over 5 hours, and longer if the lid is kept shut.
It is 16 ounces, and has a slim profile...easy to carry, transport, travel.
Klean Kanteen is a B Corporation...so you know they care.
Yeti has somehow done a better job marketing, but I think Klean Kanteen is a much better product.
It is an excellent thermos as far as keeping drinks hot. Marking off only for the non-chip resistant exterior.
There is a ridge top (concave side, middle not outer edge) of the piece that clamps onto the rubber seal. I removed this with my dremel. Still not leak PROOF but only a drop our two comes out instead of a small stream when turned upside down.
For Leak Proof, consider the Contigo's. I have 4 Contigo's and they don't leak.
It doesn't leak anymore. The key here is to make sure the lid is reassembled correctly and fitted tightly. I'm not sure if it needs time to "break in." After not using it for a month, I tried again. That's when I discovered it could be tightened a little more and the parts started to work together better. It's unfortunate it's a fussy lid. Since it doesn't leak and the it insulates very well, I bumped it one more star.
One little note was that the bottom of my bottle had a dent. I don't really mind, but that is pretty lame for a brand new product.
The key issue is with the lid. Out of the box, it leaked. The factory either does no leak testing, or the intervals are too far apart. The issue is that the silicone seal inside gets pulled against a plastic lip, which is a bit on the thin side IMO, and this lip had extra plastic on it leftover when it was molded. As you can imagine, the seal isn't going to work if the sealing surface is irregular. I shaved the plastic off with a razor blade and it sealed after that, but I should not have to do with out of the box and the average buyer likely won't even figure out why its leaking.
I would really like another lid that doesn't not have his defect sent as a replacement, but I doubt that is going to happen. If Klean Kanteen can't address these quality issues, the negative reviews are going to pile up over a relatively simple problem.
EDIT: Shortly after giving feedback to the company, the prompted Amazon to give me a partial refund for my item arriving with a dent, the also apologized and shipped me two replacement caps, one of each type.
I am pleased with the insulation of the bottle itself, and the paint seems to be of good quality. The first day I tested the bottle by putting some ice water in it, then leaving it on the counter overnight to take out with me the next day. I couldn't tell any difference in the temperature later that day and was pleased to have a cold drink in 95+ conditions, even after it sat for over 24 hours!
