KlearKase-only small issues-nothing major

My husband surprised me with my Kindle...and then after that I wanted something to protect it right away because I bang up my electronics pretty good...if I'm not losing it-it's either getting wet, hitting the ground (which is by far the most common problem I have), etc. So my first thought was to get protection for it as soon as possible...it just so happened that I found out about the KlearKase for Kindle & when reading the website...found it to be the perfect case as far as protection goes. Most other cases are more like holders...it doesn't really protect the Kindle from anything (with the exception of as long as it's closed & then you're still not getting ALL the protection that can be received)...they remind me of trapper keepers or something to that degree! I wanted more than that & the KlearKase seemed perfect because it not only fit your Kindle like a glove, it protected it from scratches and water, most importantly. So I ordered it! Received it fairly quickly...open my package...only to find out that a)they make putting it together kind of difficult...you have to do things in a certain order to make sure it's done properly; b) after trying to figure out how to set it up to assemble it around my Kindle, did I notice there were pieces missing. I sent them an email (since they don't have a customer service phone number, which I thought was odd), but my email was answered right away (they have always been on top of answering emails very fast!) & they sent out the missing parts ASAP...their customer service rocks!! But what was most disturbing was that I finally had all the parts & assembled it around my Kindle...it's not AS sealed as they claim...and the toggle covers that they included have made it very difficult to use....my toggle didn't work properly AT ALL. If I wanted to scroll down my list...it actually clicked on the book that's already highlighted. My first instinct was to not use one of the toggle covers at all, but I know now why they come with them...because your toggle is recessed...you NEED it, otherwise, you can't reach your toggle at all. I thought well, maybe I installed it improperly. No, not the case. I don't think it's worth what they ask for it simply because it doesn't COMPLETELY seal like they claim and because of the toggle cover issues that didn't allow me to use the toggle. I sent them another email today about the issue & they responded immediately with the response that about 2% of the toggles are having a few kinks and they were glad that I contacted them...and they are sending me new toggles as soon as possible. They even said they would send out another email when the toggles were mailed out! I have to give them credit...if these are the only issues...not so bad...their product isn't 100% what the company claims it to be, but have you ever found a company with a product that lives up to EVERY standard it claims to have? Umm, I doubt it! Overall, if you're one of the lucky ones who buys one without the kinks...then you are getting the biggest bang for your buck. If you're like me, and have some issues, at least rest assured...they WILL fix it & fix it fast! I guarantee you that!

Almost perfect, still the best of its kind

At the time I'm writing this review, KlearKase is a new product, and as such it has a few areas that need improvement. The extender that connects to the Kindle's joystick (which KlearKase calls a "jewel") is not thin enough to work in all Kindles, but they are working on solving this problem, and should have a solution very soon. In the mean time, in some cases it may be necessary to work with a nail file and "shave away" some of the plastic on the side/bottom of the extender, to make it work. The symptoms of this problem is when your joystick is not able to move easily in all 4 directions.

The other problem is with the volume controls. I find it very hard to change the volume up or down. It's doable, but it requires a lot of force applied with a pen tip (too hard to do with fingers). I'm sure they will eventually find a solution for that too; meanwhile, think about how often you use the volume controls (or not). It may be possible to leave the volume set on the position you use it most of the time, and forget about it. Since i don't use the Kindle to play music, the only time this bothers me is when using text-to-speach, which i don't do much. But if changing the volume up and down is a significant part of your Kindle experience, you may want to wait for them to fix this problem first.

Now the good stuff: The case looks great (IMHO of course). It adds a little more thickness to the Kindle, making it easier to hold (i think the "naked" Kindle feels too heavy and too thin). It comes with a good simple soft cloth bag so you don't need to buy another wrap. All controls (with exception of volume) work perfectly. There is very little glare (IMHO) and what there is, is manageable.

This is NOT a case you will be putting on and taking off. It's meant to be put on and left on.

Don't do like me - do read the instructions before assembling. Especially the part about keeping track of the different parts - they look the same but are different.

Finally, i can't say enough good things about KlearKase's customer support. They are helpful, committed and did i say helpful?

After working with customer support to fix the problem with the extender, i changed my review from one to four stars. The only thing keeping it from five stars is the problem with the volume controls.

It may not be a perfect product yet, but even as it is, this has no real competition.

KlearKase Best Option with Improvements

Just got my KlearKase. As I suspected the protection provided was mostly for water splashes, and for scratching, and not for dropping. The number one problem with the Kindle is the screen going bad even when dropped a short distance, even onto carpet (i.e. when I fall asleep reading). I wanted padding that still left the Kindle functional, and as secondary goals water proof and scratch proof. The hard case does protect from falling some, but does not really provide much cushioning. The KlearKase DOES allow FULL functionality for me out of the box, including the typically problematic jewel for the five way switch. I had to jiggle it a little to get it situated right. I had tried the M-Edge and it was too heavy and lacked ability to turn the thing back on when it goes to sleep. I tried the gel cover, but it was to light weight/thin to protect the Kindle from dropping. The KlearKase was almost just right. However, there was enough room for a sking according to the literature inside the KlearKase, so I put the gel cover on, then put it in the KlearKase. It was a tight fit, but that is perfect for shock proofing. Some of the buttons are have to be pressed hard, so I trimmed the gel cover away from the buttons. The gel is only needed around the edge for shock proofing the KlearKase. That helped a lot. Klear Kase should add gel edge piece to put on the Kindle before putting into the KlearKase design for this extra cushioning. It might help with the sealing also. Next I will get an anti-glare cover for the outside of the KlearKase to allow better visibility in bright lights. Then it will be perfect.
