I see one other review where the purchaser had the same problem but wasn't quite as determined as I am and failed to get the battery cover off.
This unit has the perfect balance among features, durability, accuracy, and price - dual laser, 12:1, min-max-ave-diff, and easy to set and use. Just point and shoot.
The only feature that is less than the others is it can only go 752F (400C) max. But since I will only use it mainly to monitor the house, car, oven, and grill that maxes out at 600F for searing, this unit is good enough for the range.
Couple of minor knocks. First, mine arrived in stupid plastic clamshell packaging that requires a knife to open and results in sharp plastic shards. Aren't we past that now? Second, and may be related to the first, the 9v alkaline battery that was included was practically dead. Not a huge deal as I have plenty of those lying around.
