I have owned several NCVT's through the years, including the Fluke that has been mentioned, and the older Klein NCVT-1. Yes, these older testers insert into OLDER outlets, and give a voltage detection when inserted all the way in. But, these older testers do not work in the newer Tamper Resistant outlets. Since the Tamper Resistant outlets stop little kids from sticking something in the outlet, they also stop you from sticking in your NCVT. My other NCVT's WILL NOT DETECT on these new outlets, but this Klein NCVT-3 will. This NCVT-3 will now give the same reading on old outlets, or the new Tamper Resistant ones.
That is just one of the things that is great about the voltage scale on this tester. Read reviews on other testers, for any brand. You will see some users complain other units are too sensitive, and then someone else will complain that it is not sensitive enough. Klein stops that with this bargraph. Now, you see the strength of the voltage, and not just a single LED.
I'm Even sorry I had to give 1 star ... 0 is more deserving.... C'mon Klien ..
had the same symptoms. Works great for a while then gives out. I've tried different types of batteries and it takes
forever to turn ON and then won't turn off. My life depends on it to work.
Update: It failed on me, lights were working but it wouldn't detect voltage on known live circuits. Was working on a 277 volt lighting circuit at a University and got a surprise, luckily I wasn't hurt. Most testers fail safe, meaning they indicate voltage on dead wires never the other way around, not this one.
IE, your skin, countertop, shoe, etc. Not worth even trying.
It's cheaply made with inferior parts. Waste of time and money.
I got to use it less than a dozen times and it failed me out in the field when I needed it most. Just quit. I tried new batteries, lengthening the battery spring to gain firmer contact, all to no avail.
Klein, are you reading these reviews? You should and tell your Chinese suppler to step up the quality control before you lose me as a longtime fan of your tools.

Works amazing well... just bring it near the hot side of an outlet and it indicates if the power is on or not. I'm sure I'll find many uses for it. Read morePublished 1 month ago by William C. Bowblis
