* Durable - Seriously, 3 years and both pairs still work. Several times a week, I wind the cord around the volume control and then unwind it. My cord won't lay flat from all of the winding. But there are no shorts in the cord.
* Value - I paid around $50 for each pair and both are still working.
* Comfort - I can keep these things in for a 10-hour flight without ear pain. Though I've never tried sleeping with them in.
* Sound quality - They're no Bose, but they're great for listening to audio books, podcasts, and music. I can hear everything I care about. (I don't like bass.)
* Buttons work great with iPhone.
* Staying power - They mostly stay in my ears, but I haven't found ANYTHING that does. I think it's just my ears. Those stupid Apple pods HURT and constantly fall out.
* Ear cushions pop out - When I take them out and move around, the little rubber ear cushions pop out. I usually find them.
I would definitely buy them again.
These did not stack up to the original pair. The design was similar, but they had problems with noise cancellation as well as the buttons sometimes not working when trying to use siri with the headphones.
They're sturdy and the overall physical quality makes it seem as they will last forever, where they ultimately failed though was the tech side of things.
I tend to judge headphones on two things: sound quality and comfort.
In terms of sound, these are simply the best IEMs I have listened to. Aside from the headphones I've owned, I've tested out many other pairs, more and less expensive. Compared to something like the Bose IE2s, the S4 is more lenient towards the low-end, meaning there is more bass in songs, which tends to slightly distort the mids, but I have no problems with it because for my taste of music, the songs actually sound better.
In terms of comfort, the S4s are okay. Not the best, not the worst. These aren't the type of IEMs that you can keep in your ear for hours at a time. Couple of hours is probably the max before your ears start to hurt, but that is the case with pretty much all IEMs, both high end and low end.
Also of note, the control buttons worked....partially...for Android systems. Turns out that there is a button combination I would trigger rarely that would call my last contact when I would fiddle while running. It always made for an awkward quarter mile for everyone involved.
1. The ear buds are horrible, I tried all the sizes that came with and was unable to find a set that fit snug enough and didn't fall out while running and cycling. Even when walking around I can feel them trying to work themselves free!
2. The controller is rather large, it measures about two inches long and around a 1/4 in wide. The size of this thing is bulky and bangs around when running and can get in the way when lifting. It also tugs on the ear buds and helps dislodge them from my ear.
3. When I first push them in, the sound is pretty good but nothing amazing. I honestly find comparable sounds in the $20 sony ear buds these replaced. The highs are pretty crisp, the mids are a little muffled, and the bass is pretty low but slowly goes away as you start your exercise because they start to come out.
Overall, I would not recommend these if you are going to use them for recreational use... unless you purchase new ear moldings.
Top international reviews
Did some extensive research before choosing these...hey were well reviewed by several consumer blogs , and seemed to tick every box. Bright attractive wire on black...actually matches my phone case! Large size volume and mute buttons are a real bonus. My fingers are not as, hmmm, delicate as I'd like them to be. I bought these for listening to music while out and about or helping me through a run or gym workout. If I'm outside on the streets I don't want complete noise canceling earphones as I live in a busy area trafficked by people and vehicles. But in certain places e.g. The gym, the underground, I do like very loud and these are really just average. Definitely not as loud as my previous Beats ( I stopped buying that brand as twice the wires snapped within weeks). But a good eye catching and robust design - and they don't get as tangled as others.
The issue if you run or cycle with in ear 'phones is excessive moisture and eventually the sound in one ear will fade and vanish. Thus, my expectations upon buying these were quite low, but I have used them for 4-5 times a week and for at least one hour every time and they still work! The irony is they are the cheapest of the ones I have tried. The sound may not be as good as Shure and the rest, but (and I am very particular!) it's good enough.
One tip, buy the triple ear flanges (from amazon) which if applied properly will provide a seal and add to the listening experience.
The remote is larger than I expected but I did not find it got in the way when using the clip provided. It's large size does make it very easy to use.
The sound is good but not brilliant. I prefer the softer bass sounds from studio monitors but even these earphones leave me wishing for more bass.
The non-rugged ones always seem to last about six months.
On the other hand, I've never had a rugged pair (which are still light and comfortable for me) break at all.
Music sounds great, I can wear them for hours without them being uncomfortable.
They are great value, great sounding headphones and I'd gladly recommend them!
They sound good but just do not last. Poor value on that basis.
