Top customer reviews
2) Nice, real leather case, much more durable than the one pictured
3) Unique design including a pseudo-locking blade
4) Solidly built
1) Not Damascus steel
2) A bit too heavy to carry
3) Lacks some of the detailed finish of the pictured knife (I will try to add a photo or two later)
4) Leather case is brown, not black as pictured (no biggy, but still)
The bottom line here is that I am happy with this purchase, at $32 I could not go wrong unless it was plastic, and I WOULD recommend the knife to anyone who wants a beautiful knife to display... but not use.
(NOTE: Modern damascus steel (also known as billet welded steel) is produced by "folding" steel over itself repeatedly, usually using two pieces of steel with different carbon content to allow for a bright "wood grain" pattern to be revealed during the final polishing. The end result is a perfectly glass smooth, hard yet flexible, stunningly attractive piece of steel. This knife is not glass smooth, the grain pattern on its surface is the result of "hills and valleys" like you might find in your fingerprint which would only result if the blade were etched in some fashion. I performed only one more test, I polished the blade's edge with a 16,000 grit Japanese Whet Stone, (normal used to dress up my damascus cutlery). Due to the design of this knife with the "damascus" pattern running all the way to the factory grind marks, the polishing should have revealed the pattern all the way to the edge, it did not, only made it shine like a mirror. I will try to capture that in the photos later as well)
That being said, I still LOVE this knife! It has a beautiful fit in the hand, and even the first time I used it it felt as though I had been working with it for years. It is a razor style knife so the thumb must be used to keep the knife open in the normal grip, but the design keeps the fingers safe from the edge if an improper hold is used causing the blade to fold during use.
Speaking of beautiful, just look at the picture! And I think the knife looks even better in real life than in the pictures. There is a lot of detail work on these, much more than I expected at this price.
If the finish on my blades had been just a bit better this would have received 5 stars, but for the price it's very hard to beat the value of this knife.
I have a couple other blades from Knife King and they are good, but not quite as nice as this blade, I'd rate them all solidly in the 4 star range. All the knives I've bought from them have been very good values, very good feel in the hand with excellent balance, the only week area has been the symmetry of the final shaping.
I'm not a big fan of the case that came with the knife. The knife fit into the case but the case was not fit to the knife. I soaked the case in water for a couple days, reformed it roughly to the knife, ran a new stitch around the lower portion and fit it properly. Thankfully there was enough extra leather there to make it work.
Shipping can take a while but there's not much that can be done about that, customs will move at their own pace.
To sum it up, I'm happy with all my purchases from Knife King and this knife is my favorite.
