The Rick O'Shea legend continues in New London CT, mingling (ok, may mingling is not the right verbiage) with Dex's. As Rick always says, "LIFE IS COMPLICATED" and it is very evident here. There are some very unusual twists here with DEX's having unusual powers, not just physical anymore (not much of a spoiler to the first book). Read and learn how the KNIGHT part of the story comes out!
We have all kinds of action: mystery, battles, "police" work, romance, betrayals (who knew!), science, interpersonal battles/conflicts, some laughs, technology and let's not forget the always amazing 1970 Challenger (Yes, it handles great in the snow!)
I do not want to spoil the story for you with this review. Let's just says that some hero's die in some very epic conflicts, new ones are born and life continues to be complicated. The story line is very much alive and in depth here.
I was able to finish this in record time (for me anyway) as it was EXTREMELY hard to put down. I think it was about 15 hours for this slow poke to get through it.
The first book is recommended before the 2nd, but it is not a must as the story is well built with details from the characters previous bouts well placed inside the story.
I had my book auto graphed (Via Amazon books, Mark Aberdeen), so not only did I get a great book, but when this goes to a movie, I will have a real collectors item.
Aberdeen is a new author and I believe he will continue to evolve the Rick O'Shea story with some remarkable twists and turns, making for a great read as he did this this book.
Mark Aberdeen’s dialogue is about as good as it gets, and his imagery and descriptions place you within the pages right in the heart of the story and setting; cold and snowy New London. All This along with the face-paced narrative and action scenes makes this one easy to read and hard to put down. Aberdeen does a great job not just with building suspense with the story arc, but keeping the tension alive with each individual scene.
This exchange between Julie and Monica Voight aka Pink Panther after Rick (Monica’s boyfriend) is injured is a good example of the pacing and power of Aberdeen’s work.
Monica grasped Julia’s hand. “We’re partners.” With an exaggerated twist on her lips, she added, “With benefits.”
Julia’s eyebrows arched. “Oh?” “He’s undecided about anything else at the moment.” “Really.” Julia shifted her gaze to me. “You’re undecided about her?” She threw her hands up. “I’m convinced. You’re an idiot. She could make me switch to women.”
“How sweet.” Monica beamed. “And adorable. I love that Goth look you got goin’ on there.”
Dex and Knight is a literary version of the X-men with a bite, maturity, and similar voice as Deadpool. It hits hard; a superhero universe for us adults, in every way … yay! What makes it extremely unique is that the hero of our story is like you and me … human. It’s refreshing and highly recommended.
If I had any complaint it would be that the story runs too fast and the relationships between the characters are often glossed over in the attempt to get to the next fight scene.
Still, I found the story engaging and was interested in turning pages to find out what happened to the hero and his friends.
