An insider’s guide: how to become a knight, wield a sword, join a Crusade, and make your fortune.
The knight is the supreme warrior of the Middle Ages. Fully armored and mounted on a magnificent charger, he seems invincible. Honor and glory await him as, guided by the chivalric code, he fights with lance and sword. This carefully researched yet entertaining book provides all the essential information you need to become a successful knight in the later Middle Ages, during the period of the Hundred Years’ War. Should you go on a Crusade? Which order of chivalry might you consider joining? What is required when you go through the ceremony of knighthood?
Here are the answers to these and many more questions plus practical advice on topics such as equipment, fighting methods, and the conventions of warfare. But the knightly life is not all battles and sieges: there are also tournaments and jousts to enjoy and the world of courtly love.
Based on contemporary lives and descriptions, this book―written by a leading medieval historian―paints a vivid picture of what it was like to be a medieval knight. 90 illustrations, 30 in color

About the author

Michael Prestwich was born in Oxford, in 1943. The son of Oxford historians, it was perhaps inevitable that he studied at Oxford University for his first degree and his doctorate. His first job was at the University of St Andrews, where there was a highly successful department of medieval history. He moved to the University of Durham in 1979, and taught there until he retired, by which time it had rebranded itself as Durham University. In the 1990s he served as pro-vice-chancellor, with a range of responsibilities from research to health and safety. He began his own research with work on Edward I, and his publications have concentrated on thirteenth and fourteenth century England in most of its aspects, with a particular emphasis on war and its impact on government and society. He is married, with three children and what seems like a lot of grandchildren. He was awarded an OBE in 2010.

Inside however is the product of immense scholarship and a sense of humour both deployed to admiration. If you have ever wondered what being a medieval knight was like MP can tell you - and more than that, he can tell you in a medieval knight's own words, because he has read all the sources. And he can also do that without making it boring, by chosing a perfect quotation and having it fit right into a narrative you are loving - a neat trick to pull, though maybe not too much of a stretch for a man of his experience. This is a book which will fascinate small boys and girls who do want to know what being a knight was like - but it will also, without their realising it, instil in them a real interest in history done properly - through real sources and trustable facts. Imagine horrible histories written by a top historian and without the really silly jokes and you will get the idea. Prestwich has produced something really useful, reliable and impressive - without stopping it being fascinating or amusing.
I am sending it to all the boys and tomboys I know (and keeping a copy for myself too!)
