Duel McClain is a character that I won't be forgetting anytime soon. At the start of the story, Duel wins a little girl in a poker game. It quickly becomes obvious that while he has good intentions, he has no idea what he is doing. As luck would have it, Jessie finds her way to his campsite needing help. She is able to help Duel care for Marley Rose while he works to keep her safe. They have all been through some really tough times but together they seem to be stronger and really make a wonderful family.
I fell in love with these characters. Duel was such a good man. He was always trying to do the honorable thing and put other people's needs above his own. Jessie went through some horrible things before meeting Duel. She is a survivor and doesn't make excuses. She is honest with Duel from the very beginning despite what she thought it might cost her. She was such a caring person and her strength never ceased to amaze me. Marley Rose really helped to bring them together. The love the three of them shared really melted my heart.
I thought this story was really original. I am always looking for something that is a little different when I pick up a book. This one was a pleasant surprise. Duel and Jessie had such vivid and heartbreaking backstories that I was immediately hooked. Their romance was built on trust and respect and was at a much slower pace than I would have expected. There was plenty of excitement to keep the story interesting and the end of the book turned out to be quite intense.
I would highly recommend this book to fans of historical romance. I am really excited that this is the beginning of a new series because I can't wait to read more. This is the first book by Linda Broday that I have read but she has definitely captured my attention with this one.

UNDER A STARRY TEXAS SKY
Duel McClain was no knight in shining armor --- he was a drifter who prided himself on having no responsibilities. But a poker game thrust him into the role of father to an abandoned baby, and then a condemned woman stumbled up to his campfire. The fugitive beauty aimed to keep him at shotgun's length, but obvious maternal instincts belied her fierce demeanor. And she and the baby were clearly made for each other. Worse, the innocent infant and the alleged murderess opened Duel's heart, made him long for the love of a real family. And the only way to have that would be to slay the demons of the past.
Duel McClain is an honorable man whose heart was torn open when he least expected it so from that moment on he made sure that the only constant in his life was his horse, Preacher.
The nomad lifestyle was enforced when he took on the role of Bounty Hunter to earn a living, thus creating a reputation with his gun that pretty much ensured Duel was left alone by pretty much everyone.
Having broken ties with his family for years, a younger brother, a sister and their father Duel was truly a man alone.
Marley Rose came into Duel’s care via her no-good father wagering the baby girl in a poker game. (view spoiler)
To add to the poor man’s discomfort, Duel had no prior experience with taking care of children. When Jessie stumbled upon his camp, clearly having been recently brutally beaten and on the run for reasons she did not disclose, his caring instincts flared once again prompting the offer to have her travel with he and the child as her caregiver.
The events that unfold over the rest of the book encompass not only Duel, Jessie and Marley Rose slowly merging into a life together but a bit of western drama and a very long overdue making peace with ghosts from the past.
1880's Texas is the setting for this historical western romance and it carries a heck of a lot of emotions that run the gauntlet from sorrow to joy and everything in between.
I thought the solid leading man and his unexpected ladies were a good fit. As Duel said all three of them are broken but together they work as a family.
[EArc from Netgalley in exchange for honest review]
Duel McClain was the unwitting Cowboy that won Marley and he considered not taking his winning with him but he couln't leave the little tike with the likes of the father. Little did he know what a blessing she would be especially when he first left that saloon headed out on the trail not knowing one thing about babies. Their first night at a campfire headed home to have his sister raise the baby, low and behold a blooded woman turns up and passes out right in front of him.
Jessie Foltry is on the run. It turns out the blood isn't hers but Duel has no idea who's blood it is and what happened. Duel offers Jessie a deal for his protection. She promised to help care for Marley. Even though Jessie isn't sure she can trust Duel, what other option does she have? How long could she survive alone, on the run and with no money.
You will be completely taken in by these three and will have a hard time putting the book down. This book by Linda Broday will grab you on the first four pages with a plot that you have to know what is going to happen. Broday has quite a story to tell you about the three main characters and how their lives together play out. A must read!
