About the author

Helen J. Nicholson was born in Northern Ireland, and educated in Belfast, in Oadby, and at St Hilda's College, University of Oxford. She holds a doctorate from the University of Leicester. Her thesis was the basis of her first book (1993), which studied medieval views of the Templars, the Hospitallers and the Teutonic knights. Since then she has written books on the crusades, the Templars, the Hospitallers, medieval warfare, the trial of the Templars, the Templars' everyday lives, and the debates about the Templars. She has recently published a book on Queen Sybil of Jerusalem, and has completed a book on women's involvement in crusading. She is Emerita Professor at Cardiff University, occasionally appears on the TV, radio, or in podcasts, and also maintains a 'Frequently Answered Questions' page on the Crusades and on the Templars.

I really don't see any glaring weaknesses in the book. As one who is interested in military history, I probably wished that Nicholson gave more detailed and specific accounts of the Templars' responsibilities and actions in such battles as Hattin, Arsuf, Al Mansurah, La Forbie, and the siege of Acre. That said, a detailed military history is not what Nicholson set out to accomplish, so such criticism is certainly not warranted.
All in all, a great study of the Knights Templar by a SCHOLAR. No "mystical" or "esoteric" hypotheses, guesses, assumptions, or lies. Certainly, it deserves to be on the shelf next to Barber's "The New Knighthood".
The author is a worthy historian and a leading expert in the field. It is quite right that she based her conclusion on the evidence, rather than what she thought would make a good story and wild speculation. She also covers some interesting and hiterto neglected aspects of the Order of the Temple's history, such as its presence in Eastern Europe where they encountered the invading Mongols. It is engagingly written, for the most part, not too long, and does not go into excessively great detail.
There are, additionally, many great photographs of Templar buildings from throughout Europe and the Middle East.
Wonderful!

One good point of this book is that Helen Nicholson sticks to the facts quoting historical sources and tends to steer clear of the myths surrounding the Templars such as the Turin Shroud, Ark of the Covenant and the much debated Holy Grail or "Sang-reale" and she isn't afraid to point out that some of these myths are merely bed-time stories.
I would of liked to have seen a bit more info regarding some of the battles and crusades, and in particular the Templars formation during the first 20 years. Some knowledge of the Templars would help before reading but not essential. Not a book that you can just flick through. Miss a page and you'll be lost.
