The heels and toes are worked with a simple two-row repeat and are finished with a “hat closure,” a novice knitting technique often used to close the tops of hats. Easy, Clever Technique

I am about to finish my second pair of socks and I'm in love with Ms. Talley's method.

As an intermediate knitter I only recently learned to knit socks. For the record I'm a magic loop fan having struggled mightily with double points and being too cheap to buy two circular needles. Magic Loop works perfectly with this 2 in 1 technique.

I'm also new to the concept of afterthought or peasant heels but now I think I like them better than traditional heel flap and gusset style in terms of fit.

Head's up. I've personally never wanted to do toe up socks with short row heels because I don't really like short rowing. Gasp. If you do prefer toes up, this book isn't for you as there is no toe up variation. I'm still giving it 5 stars.

Some reviewers have complained about the pointy heels and toes but don't let that stop you from buying this book. The author gives instructions to make a rounded toe (and heel) variation based on stitch gauge and foot size. It's all in the charts.

Because of the simplicity of this 2 in 1 technique it would be easy to design your own socks once you've gotten the basics down. It's just a matter of gauge and using the right charts. So the book is worth every penny, IMHO.

The book gives a good recipe for making a single toe sock. The instructions for the toe and afterthought heel are identical and involve drawing the yarn through stitches to make a point. I’m glad I got this to learn about the placement of the waste yarn on the tube, but I will be doing my own style of afterthought heel and toes learned from YouTube. The patterns in the book are few and non compelling, in my opinion.

I’m already a big fan of Safiyyah’s sweater designs (check her out on Ravelry, you won’t be disappointed) so I was really excited to see her sock book. It’s really brilliant. I’m already a sock knitter but this new technique, as well as sizing for all makes me want to dive right in. For new sock knitters, there’s plenty of info to get you comfortable in the process. Info on sock knitting with different yarn weights is really exciting too as it opens up so many possibilities.
