From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1—With decidedly old-fashioned text and illustrations, this story could be seen as a kind of twist on "The Three Little Kittens." These felines live in a snug stone house with "Knitty Kitty," whose needles are never idle. "Clickety-click./Tickety-tick." She has made a hat for one of them, mittens for another, and a scarf for the third. But, because they are kittens, they decide to use their gifts on an enormous snowman. Then, when it's "bedtime for kittens everywhere," the youngsters have nothing to keep them warm and cozy. Or do they? The full-bleed illustrations in acrylic and ink portray an idyllic cottage in a snow-covered countryside. Inside the warmth is made evident with soft golds, browns, and touches of soft color here and there. A slight but endearing story that, with its repetitions and sound words, is perfect for bedtime reading.—Jane Marino, Bronxville Public Library, NY

Knitty Kitty’s knitting needles are clicking away. The brown and white kitten needs a hat to keep her cozy. Then the striped kitten needs a pair of red mittens to keep him toasty. Finally, the orange and white kitten gets a long, colorful scarf. But observant little listeners will see the first two kittens frollicking in the snow, jumping on a huge snowman—who is already wearing their mittens and hat. Soon enough, the snowman acquires a scarf too. But then, oh dear, the kittens realize they’re cold. At bedtime, they can’t sleep. We’re not cozy! We’re not comfy! We’re not toasty! they meow. Not to worry, Knitty Kitty has something to keep them warm. The final spread shows her curled up in bed with kittens tucked here and there, now warm, indeed. This is a terrific choice for the youngest listeners, who are just getting into the concept of story. The text is short but snappy; the artwork, which fills the spreads with soft winter colors, focuses on the characters but still provides detail. Keep this in mind for toddler storytimes as well.
