I don't think I've been as blissfully distracted from the pandemic and all the stress I've been feeling over it as when I was immersed in this novel. (It's actually a relief to know that I can still experience that immersion in a story world and therefore escape from the stress of the real world.) I was swept away by the author's storytelling, world-building, and skill with the pen. In addition to a kick-ass, compellingly entertaining plot and fully developed and relatable characters, there is so much gorgeous imagery and so many beautiful metaphors. There is rich symbolism throughout, as well as a truly thought-provoking allegory.
I love the demons, too (aka, The Eternals)-- they're refreshingly unlike any other demons I've ever encountered in fiction, and I've been thinking about them (as well as the whole cast of characters) long after I finished the book. Love them. Love all the vivid details in the world that mirrors our own, as well as the world of the author's creation. Wow! (And a really fun perk for me: I was a teen in the 80s, and so the music of that era has special meaning to me and evokes lots of memories. The way songs of that time period are woven in to the book is so delicious for me!)
And also, this author writes THE BEST sex scenes ever, no exaggeration. I am so impressed how they never use cliched terms or trite descriptions.... the steamy scenes are so fresh and vivid and so damn sexy!
Can't wait to see where Frank and Kasimir go in Book Two! I highly recommend this novel!
