So, the age difference. He's her father's best friend and he helped to raise her when she was little. but it's been a lot of years since then and she grew up and no one said Orion was a good guy. He's not. She's hot, and one of the best ways he can help her is to take some of the shine off her- and if he gets a piece of that in the process, so be it. This is probably what sells the book for me. The absolute realness of that. All these MC romances with supposed badboy alpha males who the author then spends 175 pages depicting as a fluffy teddy bear. Orion is not a fluffy teddy bear. He *bleeps* a girl half his age who he was once a beloved uncle to. Yeah, that's squicky, but it's also got a gritty reality to it that it allowed me to buy into and believe the world the author created.
But he's not the guy she once knew. He was exiled from her Daddy's club when she was a little girl, and he's lived a whole other lifetime since she last saw him - as has she. And Kira grew up in this world. There are no stars in her eyes. She knows what to expect and she figures out what she wants. So I had no trouble suspending my disbelief on this one. In fact, I don't read MC romances. There's nothing about the premise of drug dealing, gun running, whoring, SOB's that excites me. Cora Brent's Defiant series hooked me in though. I love her writing, and even in this earlier, shorter piece, her talent for telling a story and creating beautifully unapologetically flawed characters, shines through.
Again, CB writes very well; her characters as well defined, her use of prose and punctuation are dead on, and the flow of the story is perfectly set and and paced. All in all a great read. Then, when you find out that she pounded this bad boy out in a few days to clear her palate, so to speak, it becomes incredibly impressive.
Rock on, CB! I hope to be reading more from your Defiant MC soon.
I read these books out of order having read Promise Me first...and it really was ok, but I would recommend you read this shorter novella first as it introduces Kira and Orion and you get their history and love story from start to finish...before you see them as a happily settled couple in book 2.
Some people might be bothered by their age difference (20 years) and the fact that Orion was one of her dad's closest "brothers" at one time...and when she comes to him for help and protection, he wants what he sees...Kira as a desireable, very sexy young woman...not the little girl she once was.
I liked their story and my only complaint was that it was too short...I would have liked more details about what went down when Orion left for 3 days to "take care of business" and maybe more of them together as a couple. BUT for the most part I really enjoyed this read a lot!
