Editorial Reviews

This is ground zero for the current American garage revival we are living in, spawning a bazillion imitators in it's wake. Contains 25 of the 27 songs from the debut "Houserockin'" & the 2nd LP "I Know You Fine, But How You Doin'". Imitators, get in line.

YEEEEEEAAAAAASSSS! This is the real Detroit sound baby! Forget all that stuff 'bout how the White Stripes and The Strokes are savin' rock'n'roll and creating a "new" scene! Those lame-o dweebs couldn't even dream of making and album this great. The Gories had a profound understanding of both blues and garage minimalism. Mick's soul roar combined with Dan's punk wail mixed with a healthy dose of Peg's heavy thud created a sound capable of melting any space-age metals! You WILL worship The Gories!

This is the real deal. This is Rock and Roll. The Gories are not only one of the most influential garage bands, but one of the best. Nobody making albums today has the soul Mick Collins has. Amazing.

Totally minimalist real bluesy, garage rock. They epitomize the "garage" band. No bass, primitive drums, and two often poorly played electric guitars. Some songs I love and some songs I just plain don't like. But I don't think this band ever pretended to be anything it wasn't. And that says a lot to me. If you're into the White Stripes or bands like that check it out. Chances are you still may not like them. What you have to look at here is the sincerity and the spirit. Not the production or chops.

If your looken at the Vinyl of this record it only has 15 songs on it, the cd contains I know how your doin and House Rock'en there first record. Feral starts out House Rock'en. If I was you I'd still buy it on Vinyl and hunt around for House Rock'en on vinyl, The Gories are great but even better on Vinyl!

I hate writing reviews but previous reviewers have desicrated one of the finest offerings fron the rock GoD
Mick Collins.
This album is not for all listeners. It says way to much with so little. Without this album there would not be a White Stripes. Jacks Major influence was the Gories. THIs album has influenced more Musicians than know it exist.
If you understand it you will love if not sorry.

This records stays with you forever. How many albums sound this raw and exciting no matter how often you listen to them? These cats and kitten helped turn a whole generation or two onto forgotten R&B and teen combo sounds at time when nobody knew what garage rock was. I dig the shooting match of Vox vs. Fender tones.

The reason this kicks so much a** is because it's done with that rare combination of soul and youthful exuberance. Listen from start to finish, rinse, and repeat. It'll stick to yer ribs.

Standout tracks are:

You Make It Move
Detroit Breakdown
Stranded
Goin' To The River
Early In The Morning
Thunderbird ESQ
Nitroglycerine
Feral
I Think I've Had It
Charm Bag
I'll Go
Hidden Charms
Sister Ann

The Gories were the greatest R'n'B, garage and blues band in recent history. The Gories kicked out a brutal and raw sound that should have taken the " indie " world by storm. Gee, Alternative Press and other " on edge " magazines were pushing junk like TAD and PEARL JAM when the Gories played for the last time! How do those " grunge " records sound now! ? Yep, just like I thought- ****.
