Each theme or subsection contains 2 pages with photos of dogs demonstrating a certain behavior. The descriptive text of the book involves either what the dog is probably thinking while being involved with this behavior or how he relates to others (dogs, people, etc.) while engaging in this behavior.
I couldn’t put this book down! When I picked up this book the first time, I found myself nodding in agreement with what Fogle showed the reader in photos and what he said. Then, I just kept reading more! As I read, I remembered all of the behaviors that I have witnessed the dogs doing that I have had since childhood (multiple American Eskimos, multiple Chow Chows, a Standard Poodle, and a German Shepherd/ Labrador Retriever mix).
This book is good for people of all ages - children, and both new and experienced dog owners, and, as I have already said, it is hard to put down. This is why this book will be picked up and re-read many times.
The back outside dust cover states that this book was written in conjunction with the RSPCA and that it contains: “Over 350 specially commissioned, full colour photographs (that) capture canine behavior as never see before, and help you to observe, analyze, understand, and ‘Know Your Dog” with a completely fresh insight.”
“1. Fascinating insights into how dogs communicate through body language, ‘speaking’, and rituals; 2. Discover(y of) the real relationship between dogs and their owners; and 3. Stunning, original full colour photography captures the dog in all its moods.”
In the ‘Introduction’ on page 7, the authors states: “With help from us, dogs have evolved different characteristics to help them survive the varying environments in which we place them. Today, there are over 400 recognized breeds of dogs. These breeds exist at our whim. We create new breeds and combine or lose old ones completely according to our needs or the dictates of fashion. Because of this, it is sometimes argued that dogs are an unnatural and warped product of human intervention.”
This 1992 hard-cover book with dust jacket has 128 semi-glossy pages, with over 350 color photos, often arranged in step-by-step fashion.
The book is published by Dorling Kindersley, London.
The ‘Contents’ has 4 main Sections. Buy the book to read all of the sub-Sections (52 total, with numbers given for each one) and see their amazing color photos.
Section 1: The Pack Instinct (15 sub-Sections)
Section 2: A Dog’s Life (11)
Section 3: At Home with Us (14)
Section 4: The growing Family (12)
Following these, there are ‘The Appendices:
1. Breed Characteristics (only 62 out of 400+ breeds given, to fit on 2 pages only)
2. Assessing Your Dog’s Character
3. Useful Addresses (UK addresses only)
4. Index
However, the Bibliography, a standard book section is missing. A Bibliography includes a good selection of: magazines, books, videos, films, (web sites).
This is an amazing book for all dog owners to have on their library shelves. However, this book is so interesting (and hard to put down), this book may reside on the buyer’s coffee table, instead, because it will be picked up often!
In the back there is also a big table depicting aggression, sociability and activity of dog breeds, which I have used to buy a dog myself.
You can also assess whether your dog is sociable or not through a quiz at the back, which is a good way of assessing and training your dog better.
To me this book seems very much like The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People for dogs although it was written before that and is more detailed; it is more like a self help cross body language book on dogs.
The one draw back is that this book tends to go for popular species of dog with its examples and tables in the back and doesn't mention dogs like border collies, which I have
However I would say it is a good investment to educate you in how to deal with dogs. I think it is as essential for dog owners as a book on women is important for wife owners!
This book is designed for anyone who has or has ever had a dog. It's written clearly enough that any age can appreciate it, and the pictures are also a big plus. Nearly every topic is covered, and the book can span the life of your dog from before you buy him or her to the day they die...there's that much information.

I got this as a second hand bargain for a couple of pounds including postage.
