"A Koala for Katie" has been great for our daghter. . .we bought it when she was three. In it Katie wants to be reassured about why her "real" mother didn't want her and finds comfort in "adopting" a stuffed Koala at the zoo and role-playing as the Koala's mother. My daughter enjoys role-playing, so this is right up her alley.

I will say, however, that in trying to keep with "proper" terminology, I didn't care for the author's us of the term "real mother" when Katie asks her mom why her "real mother" didn't want her. I actually went through and use white-out and changed it to "birth mother" for the sake of consistency, especially since our daughter is at the age where she's trying to distinguish between "real", "birth" and who I am, and I am her "real" mother. That would be our only complaint about this book.

Fun story line about adoption

Cute, easy to follow story that relates the concept of adoption to the animal world and then to the adopted child's adoption of a stuffed animal. Briefly touches on the "you weren't in my belly" concept, which was easy for my 4 & 6 year old to relate to and grasp. But the story focuses more on the desire to be a parent, care taker, protector and providing all those things to a child (animal, human and even pretend animal) who needs a parent. My kids really enjoyed the story.

This book is not what adoption is like at all. No adoptive parent wants their child to call the birthmother Mommy. I bought it for my child but threw it away. It would just confuse them.

Super sweet.

A Great Indroduction into Explaining A Child's Adoption

First of all, this was (and is) my favorite book that my parents used to explain adoption as a child. They DO use the term "real mother" and whilst I understand people's issue with it, this book is like 25+ years old. All growing up, and to this day MOST people I know that grew up not having dealt with adoption on any level don't realize that that term IS hurtful to the parents. Go back 30 years and that was common in most every book, just like this. ANYWAY it still made for a great story and an amazing introduction (for a 2yo to pay attention and try to understand) into what adoption was and why. If you have an older child then YES it may be confusing if you weren't trying to explain that at a younger age but I'd say it's most age appropriate as anywhere from like 2-4 with further explanations and discussion with the 3-4yo. Definitely don't underestimate your child's capacity to learn and understand it though, they pick up on more than you realize~

A decent adoption book that might resonate with a variety of adoptive families because the reason Katie was available for adoption isn't a big part of the story. The story is really about what might happen to a baby koala who lost its mother, and Katie imagining herself taking on the role of adoptive mom. This isn't one of my favorites, but it's definitely worth a look if you are having trouble finding adoption books that you like.
