Koala Kid actually began life in 2012 as a South Korean/ American collaboration titled The Outback for most of the world. Built on a surprisingly low budget of $5.3 million, the film managed to return $4.6 mil at the Chinese box-office alone. From there it began distribution on the home market, arriving in the US as Koala Kid thanks to 20th Century Fox the following year (April, 2013).
Coming in at a run-time of 85-minutes and wearing a PG rating for mild action, peril and some rude humor, the film centers on a rare albino koala bear named Johnny (Rob Schneider) who, because of his difference in appearance, is bullied and outcast. He ends up aligning himself with Tasmanian dev Hamish (Bret McKenzie) and photographer primate Higgins (Frank Welker) and together the trio manage to make a small name for Johnny as an attraction at the local carnival freak show.
A wagon accident on roue to the carnival’s next stop results in their becoming entangled in the struggles of an oppressed population of billabong dwellers being controlled by a malevolent croc named Bog (Alan Cumming).
Of course grander themes of bullying and, if you really read into it, the narrow minded scope of racism are present within the prose though in delivery, the lessons are subtle enough not to feel force fed. The story presents itself as one of adventure with some comedic moments scattered about for good measure that kids will be sure to enjoy more so than it is a thinly disguised cautionary tale.
In order to differentiate itself from a market full of other talking animal CG pieces, Koala Kid makes use of a unique color pallet that is difficult to define though unmistakable just the same (even the DVD box art manages to capture it).
Pacing is quick and efficient and the script offers up some decent humor that is, and this is extremely rare in its own right, actually enhanced by some of the onscreen humor (one of my favorite moments in the film comes when the characters crash their circus wagon into a ravine and the monkey, Higgins, still battered from the resulting impact, manages to snap a photo of Johnny for publicity purposes).
Adding to the big budget feel of the piece, there is a well presented musical number in the middle of the film set to a (well done) remake of the staple Australian anthem Down Under from the Men at Work.
Sure, fastidious CG aficionados accustomed to the type of attention to detail that has made Pixar films so endearing may question little nuances like why can all of the animals talk except for the monkey (which, I suppose could arguably be considered the most intelligent of the animal species chosen here), or why the English vocal directors seemed to go the extra mile to avoid casting anyone with an authentic Australian accent (perhaps the film’s meager budget couldn’t secure the likes of Hugh Jackman or Nicole Kidman). Overall though, these are minor nuances that detract little from the viewing experience.
In conclusion Koala Kid represents a nice change of pace in the generally abysmal arena that is the direct-to-dvd CG animated feature film. The fact that 20th Century Fox, the company now responsible for domestic distribution or all of Blue Sky and DreamWorks’ CG DVDs/ blu-Rays, opted to distribute this one says a lot about their own belief in the project. It isn’t as easy to track down as some of the more popular titles released on the label but those who do locate it won’t be disappointed by adding it to their CG collection.
