From Booklist

Annan rose from humble beginnings as a schoolboy in Ghana to world statesman and Nobel Peace Prize winner. He ran afoul of the Bush administration with his resistance to the war in Iraq, and his image has been tarnished by allegations of corruption by his son. Meisler, author of United Nations: The First Fifty Years (1995), chronicles the changing fortunes of the UN as he recounts Annan's rise in the organization and the inside politics that led him to the secretary-general post. Annan, who began his career with the UN in 1962, working his way up through mundane jobs in personnel and budgeting, had his first assignment as a peacekeeper in Egypt in 1972. Annan was involved in some of the greatest achievements and failures of the UN in the Middle East, Africa, and Eastern Europe. Readers interested in international affairs will appreciate this absorbing account of the rise of one man and the changing image and influence of the UN, particularly as its impact on world affairs broadens.
