Great Markings, Good Tape Appearance, Retraction is Sub-Par

Big fan of the additional measurement markings as well as the white color and satin-feel to the tape.

I deduct two stars because the retraction function leaves a bit to be desired. It's difficult to trigger the retraction with one hand; I find myself holding the measure in one hand and using the other to apply enough leverage on the retract button to get it to go. Also, when it's retracting, it does so inconsistently. Would prefer a smoother, faster retraction of the tape.

I purchased this tape measure earlier this year before I started a few home improvement projects. Recently I was on my step ladder in the garage, hanging up a pegboard backer for my garden tools, when the tape slipped off my pocket clip & fell to the ground from about 3-4 ft. When I went to use it again the end hook was bent backwards. Now, part of the reason I bought this tape measure was because of the product description, & I quote "Protected End Hook:
The design of the case was strategically manufactured to protect the end hook on impact. No need to worry about dropping this tape measure." So why would I worry about dropping it from a short distance off a ladder???? Because, after reading the companies warranty replacement policy it says "These are valid reasons to refuse a replacement.....Last one is End hook is bent from being dropped, stepped on, or accidentally hit by another tool." I guess if you buy this tape measure make sure you don't drop it because its likely the end hook could bend and then its useless & a waste of money.

I love this Komelon Gripper Speed-Mark tape measure. My old thin/cheap one that I used upstairs finally pushed me to the brink to the point where I wanted a new one. I have a Craftsman that I use as well but that is in the 'shop.' If you're using a cheap tape measure, you know the dance of trying to get the tape to stay extended with our bending because of the cheap gauge of metal used in the tape. Not so with this Komelon. It's extremely sturdy. In fact, while holding the tape measure I can extend it almost 8' unsupported before it 'breaks.' Pretty incredible.

Additionally, the gray tape is very easy to read and I love the measurements being listed in 1/8 increments with unlisted 1/16 marks as well. The roller mechanism is smooth and the locking mechanism sturdy and secure.

A tape measure is one of those things easy to skimp on early in life when you don't understand the difference quality makes. And then when you upgrade, you'll never go back. This is the case with this Komelon and it's an easy repurchase if I need another one. I've even considered replacing my trusty Craftsman.

Easy to read

Nice tool.
It is as clear as a tape can be. The flat white is easy on the eyes. I don't need millimeters for most of the chore work I do.
I read a complaint about the size of the case not being standard. It is exactly the same as my 30 year old Stanley 20 ft Powerlock, which it will replace.
It stands on its own to about 90 inches, with 7 feet being easy.
It feels very substantial. I doubt I'll bang it around much but it feels like a real tool. I like the armor and the grip it provides.

Really smooth extension and retraction of the tape. It's relatively heavy, in the good way, and seems like it's very durable. Numbers are very easy to read. The locking button is a bit stubborn to get locked into place. It's not too bad but it doesn't easily slide down to lock. Ok, hold on, it does easily slide down to lock but not as "buttery" as a $30 tape measure but for $7 I'm very happy.

Hard to Read, Heavy, Twists Easily

Sorry to say this was was not an improvement over what I was replace it with. The measuring tape itself is a light gray, making the numbers and lines harder to read -- I generally dislike the standard yellow tape, but have just proven to myself that there is a good reason why that's standard as it's much easier to read, especially from a distance. Black on grey is not as distinct. The casing is much heavier -- maybe my old measure was shorter than this one of 25 ft. There is a lot of curve in the tape itself, making it twist easily when laying it out. Overall, I'd rate this as NOT one of my better decisions.

Two fundamental issues.

1. The case has no markings on how long it is. This is a common practice for measuring inside corners. This is problematic for this tape measure because the back of the case is rounded. Yes, there is a square base at the bottom of the back that is 3" from the tape measure marker, but the round case back protrudes beyond the squared-off base, making this tape measure useless for inside measurements.

2. The angle of the tape coming out from the case is not perpendicular to the base of the case. There are many times I like to lay a tape measure out over a board to mark it in some regular increments. You can't do that with this tape measure. To give you an idea of the angle, if you pull the tape measure 12 inches out, and let the case sit naturally, the tip of the tape (1 foot from the case) will be 1 1/8 inches off the work surface.

This is an incredible secondary measuring tape. I have already been using the 16ft high res version of this at work for some time-- great for quick wood cutting measurements or figuring out the size of the pipe you need to adapt to.

I say secondary because in Canada specifically, having a main tape that's a little more heavy duty and has metric is very useful for European, Arabic and other international clients who most often provide measurements in metric, so it takes the Googling/Math out of the equation, whereas the Komelon SM5425 is all about quick imperial measurement and I'd give a 7/10 in regards to build quality-- not the toughest, but still FAR better than anything else I've seen or used in this price range.

The tape stand out (extending it as far as you can in the air before it breaks) seems to be around 10-11ft. All the black portions you see in the picture are rubberized while the white is a hard plastic. The belt clip has a little side-to-side give, which is needed if you hook it directly to your waist so you don't bruise your sides while leaning over. The greyish tape itself is quite non-reflective so if you're working outside or under large lamps, you don't need to worry about the direct light getting in your way. It has a decent heft for a 25ft-- not the lightest and not the heaviest I've used, but a good balance for larger hands.

Overall, for the price, this tape is outstanding if you do NOT need metric and I've found it very useful for most woodworking and plumbing applications.

I hadn't considered that a tape measure sold in Canada, or in the world for that matter, could only have imperial measurements on it, but here's one. I should have read the reviews pointing this out and hope you see that too. It IS a well made product, but limiting it's usefulness to a measurement system used by a fraction of the human population limits it's rating with me.

I love this measuring tape! It's big, it's solid, and it's reliable! I will warn you though this product falls under the imperial system of measurement -- inches, feet, etc. It's practical for North Americans but probably useless if you rely on the metric system.

I've used this to measure all sorts of things for my apartment. It is my trusty measuring tool! A keeper!

If you work indoors or with wood then this will be a great tape measure. I work outdoors and measure dirt and gravel heights and various concrete things, and it's worn the coating off the first two feet so it's essentially useless. The markings are great however and even the dumbest guy on your crew can read this tape. I'd recommend it, you just might need to replace it.
