The only drawback, and I assume this is for all of these type devices, is if you leave it plugged in your car/boat, etc. for long periods of time while your vehicle is OFF, it will drain your battery fairly fast. The longest I've left it plugged in while my car was off was about 3 hours. But I did this repeatedly and it eventually caused the premature death of my car battery in Dec 07.
HOWEVER, THIS said, I have an 05' mid-size SUV and this was the original battery so that also may have contributed.
We originally thought we'd be taking the cooler in and out of the vehicle to refill each day, but we've found it easier to bag food and leave the cooler in the console. If you are using it more conventionally, like between your seats in a van with no center console, for example, you'll find it easy to carry in and out. Some reviewers mentioned a noisy fan--we have to lean over to listen to make sure that we turned it on, we find it so quiet. The exhaust output is of course warm--we have a metal mesh screen built into the back of the console for this purpose. This was expected and is completely normal.
Everybody at the upfitter shop was so impressed with the console design around this cooler that two other customers order the same console/cooler when they saw ours, and the shop bought a half a dozen for future upfits. A Very positive experience out about 16 months from purchase.
OK, I've now officially tested this product during an exceptionally hot and humid weekend of camping and it worked great. What I did, since I knew that it was going to be super hot with very high humidity, was follow the instructions, or recommendation, of another reviewer. I put a hard ice pack in the bottom and also, a Gator Ade bottle, with frozen water, in the unit. I just used this for Gator Ade as it is just too hot to eat, lol, and it worked fine. I made sure to keep it in the shade at all times. When I got home, the bottle filled with ice, still was pretty frozen. It wasn't totally frozen, of course, but, it did still have a huge chunk of ice within. I think this is going to work just fine. Plus, it wasn't loud at all. I literally had to put my hand by the fan to make sure it was running. I give this a huge thumbs up and would recommend to others.Read more ›
The device would have possibly been fine I think in a larger car with a stronger alternator and battery BTW. I also bought the battery saver. This did a bit better but I found it heated up the cabin as well as the cooler did by itself just too much on hot days in the summer. Might have worked better in the winter or somehow putting it up on my roof rack rather than having it inside a little bug with two people and a dog. I would not recommend this or any device like it for a small car as configured.

I originally bought one several years ago and it worked great. And then I accidentally left some cheese inside and it developed a real bad smell inside so I bought a second one. Read morePublished 4 months ago by Shops in Milwaukee
DO NOT BUY THIS. I put a few items in the bag and put it in the car. Had not even plugged it in. We took it out of the car and the entire plastic unit fell off. Piece of junk. Read morePublished 5 months ago by Bart b.
