Koolatron Compact Kooler
The Koolatron P20 Compact 12V Cooler was designed for the active lifestyle. Constantly on the go? No problem! This thermoelectric cooler goes along for the ride and keeps all your snacks and drinks cool without the use of any ice. It is specially developed to fit in those tight spaces between and behind the seats of your car, minivan or truck. This 12 Volt cooler plugs directly into your vehicle’s cigarette lighter, and can be set to keep your food up to 40 ° F colder than the outside temperature.
The Koolatron Cooler was invented over 30 years ago. It replaces traditional ice chests with technology that is even more sophisticated than your home refrigerator, and far better suited for travel. It's ideal for road trips, camping excursions, boating, tailgate parties. Or use your cooler at home or in a dorm room as an extra fridge. Koolatron thermoelectric coolers keep your food and beverages cool without requiring you to stock up on ice every few hours. Our coolers draw less power than your car’s parking light and plug directly into your car's 12-volt power outlet. Once plugged in, the cooler's solid state thermoelectric cooling module--which takes up less space than a 1.5 inch x 1.5 inch matchbook--will cool the contents to approximately 40 degrees Fahrenheit lower than the temperature of the surrounding air. For example, at a temperature of 80 degrees F the contents of the cooler will stay at 40 degrees F. As a result, you can store cool drinks for extended trips, preserve leftovers, and even keep ice cubes whole for three or four days longer than traditional coolers. No more costly stops for soda or snacks, means you will save you both time and money while on the road.
And your Koolatron Cooler doesn’t just keep things cool. What’s amazing is that with a simple flip of the cord, your Koolatron becomes a warmer. You can use the Koolatron Cooler to warm food up to 130 degrees F--hot enough for a potluck dinner or a picnic meal--or for warming infant food and bottles while on the road. For over 35 years Koolatron has been manufacturing these portable 12V cooler/warmers right here in North America.
-12V Solid state Portable Cooler plugs directly into your vehicle's 12V outlet

-Slim, compact design is ideal for minivans, SUVs, or small cars
- Solid state technology with only one moving part--the fan motor. No compressors, coils, or gases
-Great for short or long haul road trips, camping or even in the house (with optional AC Adapter)
- Reliable and built in North America to last
NASA-Inspired 12V Portable Refrigerator:
Because of the tough demands and reliability requirements of space, scientists had to find something more dependable and less bulky than traditional refrigeration coils, gases and compressors. Extensive research finally led to a miraculous solid state component: the Thermoelectric Module.
The Koolatron Cooler has only one moving part, the fan motor, so there are no parts to wear out or break down. Since the thermoelectric module is a solid state heat pump, it’s not affected by tilting, jarring or vibration--which often causes compressor based refrigerators to fail. The 12 Volt cooling module is no bigger than a matchbook, yet delivers the cooling power of a full 10 pound block of ice.
From Satellites TO SUVs:
Thermoelectric cooling has been proven with over 50 years of use in the most rigorous space, missile control, and laboratory applications. Koolatron, a North American company, was the first manufacturer to make this technology available to families, boaters, fishermen, campers, and hunters or for anyone on the go. Home refrigeration has come a long way since the ice box and blocks of ice. But on the road, the only choice for many years was to rely on messy ice chests and suffer through soggy, even spoiled food. Now all the advantages of home refrigeration cooling are available electronically in your car while traveling.
Consider Your Last Trip:
You finally got away on your vacation and are cruising comfortably in the car along a busy interstate with only a few rest stops or road side restaurants. The kids are hungry. Your fully stocked Koolatron Cooler could have come to your rescue with fruits, sandwiches and drinks--all fresh and cold. Everyone could have helped themselves. With the option to choose from over 15 different sizes and shapes of Koolatron Coolers, you have the right size cooler for your trip. You save precious cargo space and also save valuable vacation time and money with fewer stops and fewer expensive on-the-go restaurant bills.
Just Load It Up, Plug It In, and Save Money as Well:
On road trips, just plug your Koolatron into your car’s 12 volt power outlet. Your Koolatron will use less power than a tail light. If you decide to carry it to a picnic spot or your favorite fishing hole, the Koolatron Cooler can hold its cooling capacity without power for several hours.
A family of four on a week’s vacation on the road can save more money than the cost of the Koolatron while being able to picnic at rest stops or anywhere the family prefers.
A Wide Number of Practical Uses:
The Koolatron Cooler offers a number of benefits to anyone who travels frequently in a vehicle. Great for day trips, long overnight journeys, pleasure boating, fishing, camping or just traveling around town. And because there's only one moving part (the 12-volt fan), virtually nothing in the cooler can wear out. The Koolatron Cooler can also be invaluable as an extra fridge in a recreation room or basement bar, the main fridge in a dorm room, as a medical cooler for samples or temperature-sensitive drugs, and as a storage case for heat-sensitive cameras and film equipment in extreme climates.
With over 35 years of manufacturing experience building, designing and improving 12V Thermoelectric coolers at facilities in North America, Koolatron Coolers are sold worldwide, offering a wide variety of different size coolers to fit the personal needs of every consumer. Whether needed for short trips, long range hauling or tailgating, they are built to last and provide you with the highest quality travel cooler/warmer possible.

The fan you hear does not move air in the cooler. It only draws the heat out of the cooling element on the outside. The cooling element on the inside is just cold.
Consider if you had a block of ice as small as a stick of butter in the corner of your cooler, that never melts. That is what this is like. There's no cool air circulating in the cooler, it's just sucking heat out from a small area. It will take some time, and if the area at the bottom of the cooling unit is blocked or insulated, the rest of the cooler will eventually get warm.
I have a thermometer in an empty cooler that has been running for a couple of hours, and while the outside temperature is 72°F, the inside temperature is 28°F. Yes, below freezing. But if I place insulating items around the bottom of the cooling element, such as boxes of Thin Mints (so good!) then the rest of the cooler won't get nearly so cold. It can stay as hot as 50°F at the far end of the cooler when the cold can't be transferred there.
So... as others have said, best place to start is with already-cold items. That will give the cooler its best shot. The next thing to consider is to place liquids and solids that transfer heat closer to the cooling element than boxes of loose items. Boxes that contain a lot of air will insulate the cooling element from the rest of the cooler. Allow as much airflow as possible around items. This will allow natural convection to mix the air as much as possible. (If you happen to have a mechanical engineer in the family who works with heat transfer devices or remembers his fluid dynamics from college, you're golden. :D )
One note: the cooler is not the most insulating thing in the world. It really does rely on the cooler to work for it to keep its temperature. If you keep it in the sun, it will get warm.
Good luck! With some practice and planning, this thing will work as advertised, or better. I've had 50°F differences or greater between the outside and inside air.
So far we have used this cooler for about 60 or 70 hours of drive time and it has worked perfectly. Today I pulled it out and found that it STOPPED WORKING!! It would heat up but the cooling fan did not turn. Boy was I furious, as we have barely used this only a couple of times. I started looking into the warranty, and then the engineer/mechanic in me said take it apart and see if it can be repaired. So that's what I did.
Using a #2 square bit, took the two screws out of the bottom and popped off the rear cover. Easily found the problem once the rear cover was removed. The power connector to the cooling fan had been jarred loose. I reconnected the connector, wrapped it in a little electrical tape so it woudnt come lose again, and now the cooler works like new again.
So in conclusion, my cooler needed a very minor repair. It's a 5 star product, but I will give it 4 stars for the hassle of fixing it. Most people would just have thrown it away or attempted a warranty repair with the manufacturer, so I am glad that I took the rear cover off to see that it was a very simple fix of just plugging the small fan connector back in.
