Pros:
It is large enough to carry what we need for a trip lasting several days while compact enough to fit easily in any of our vehicles.
It keeps things cool while in transit to a destination with an in-room refrigerator.
It is sufficiently insulated to keep things adequately cool *with* the addition of a couple of cold packs.
Cons:
Here is the big problem and absolutely Not unique to this product- it does not have much cooling capacity on its own.
After reviewing the extravagant claims in some reviews I performed my own test, here are the results:
At a stable ambient temperature of 72F, the unit achieved a steady-state internal temperature of 57F, i.e. a temperature differential of 15F.
Here's the explanation of why this result is reasonable:
Thermoelectric coolers, like this one, use a device known as a Peltier which operates on the Seabeck effect. These solid-state devices cause heat to move from one side to the other in the direction of electric current flow. This is why the heat transfer can be reversed by changing the direction of the current, i.e. reversing the polarity of the plug causes the interior of the Koolatron to warm. This happens because the 'heat' follows the flow of electrons from one side of the Peltier junction to the other. Thus, the amount of heat transferred across the device is proportional to the number of electrons (current) flowing through it. As others have noted, this unit operates at 48watts (12V * 4A). Single-stage Peltiers (like this one) are typically 5% efficient at converting current into heat transfer equating to a typical heat transfer of ~2.5 watts. So, imagine the heat that would be captured by putting a 2.5-watt incandescent light bulb in a 1.4 square foot box. This is the amount of heat this cooler can move, either into or out of its interior.
It is physically impossible to create a 45F degree differential, especially at an ambient temperature of 90F+ using this technology *at* this power level. Thus, my observed temperature difference of 15F at 72F is quite good considering what we're working with here.
Conclusion:
For its design and price point, this cooler does what anyone should expect from it. This insulated box will keep things 'cold' for (I'm guessing) ~24 hours of travel in a warm environment. Think of the electric cooling component more like the 'wind on the back' of the ice packs;)
Pros:
- This actually does drop the temperature ~40 degrees. I've had bottled water, right next to the vent, ice up.
- The lid is easy to throw open and shut. I never had a problem with it not shutting properly.
- Plugging this unit in is a breeze and i love how they color coded which way you should plug it in. Hot or Cold?
- Plenty of room in this cooler, i can store 12 cans of soda and 24 bottles of water. I probably save $20+ a week bring my own beverages.
- Easy to carry with hollowed grips on the sides.
Cons:
- Please don't cut cost on insulation. Please add a little more insulation. The walls seem to be very thin.
- The construction is flimsy and cheap.
Overall, I highly recommend this unit as it has lasted me over a year (5+ months of continuous use over the road).
The fan you hear does not move air in the cooler. It only draws the heat out of the cooling element on the outside. The cooling element on the inside is just cold.
Consider if you had a block of ice as small as a stick of butter in the corner of your cooler, that never melts. That is what this is like. There's no cool air circulating in the cooler, it's just sucking heat out from a small area. It will take some time, and if the area at the bottom of the cooling unit is blocked or insulated, the rest of the cooler will eventually get warm.
I have a thermometer in an empty cooler that has been running for a couple of hours, and while the outside temperature is 72°F, the inside temperature is 28°F. Yes, below freezing. But if I place insulating items around the bottom of the cooling element, such as boxes of Thin Mints (so good!) then the rest of the cooler won't get nearly so cold. It can stay as hot as 50°F at the far end of the cooler when the cold can't be transferred there.
So... as others have said, best place to start is with already-cold items. That will give the cooler its best shot. The next thing to consider is to place liquids and solids that transfer heat closer to the cooling element than boxes of loose items. Boxes that contain a lot of air will insulate the cooling element from the rest of the cooler. Allow as much airflow as possible around items. This will allow natural convection to mix the air as much as possible. (If you happen to have a mechanical engineer in the family who works with heat transfer devices or remembers his fluid dynamics from college, you're golden. :D )
One note: the cooler is not the most insulating thing in the world. It really does rely on the cooler to work for it to keep its temperature. If you keep it in the sun, it will get warm.
Good luck! With some practice and planning, this thing will work as advertised, or better. I've had 50°F differences or greater between the outside and inside air.

Basically it's a posh cool box with no controls and with that technology it is on 24/7 drawing 4amps which is inacceptable for me as I'm a wild camper and don't visit campsites so my batteries have to function 48 hours at least between charges. My plan is to buy a 12v timer to halve the consumption and hope to make this work.
If you are tempted then I suggest you take account of the current depletion as it is ON permenantly.
In an ordinary car it's only suitable for day trips out discharging for no more than an hour or two at a venue, too risky to draw more on your main function battery I reckon. If you are in a camper and stopping overnight in sites with electric hook up no worries however the motor hum IS INCESSANT and annoying when the sound of silence is what you are seeking.
With the timer I'm buying I'm hoping to cut out half the noise and cut out half the battery consumption.
So finally just remember this is not a refrigerator it's a cool box which will keep your stuff cool, cold even but will struggle interminably to get room temperature volumes down to cold.
So cool the box in good time before using, ensure stuff you are taking spends extended time in your home fridge so it can be placed in this box colder than you intend to use it. Then this box will delay the warming and you should have cool fresh produce for a decent amount of time if the box is controlled with a timer. I honestly believe that placing two or three 2 litre bottles straight from the supermarket shelves into this box on a run will will have no serious cooling effect and will tend to warm the interior to the detriment of other stuff inside. Stuff needs to be COLD already before placing it inside.
So what you get is a very expensive cool box or conversely a cheap fridge which could take a bit of planning and extra equipment to enjoy.
Size is really practical for car, the handle seems solid, but it's fairly heavy already when it's empty.
The external fan is in line with the build quality -don't expect a ultra low noise professional fan, this is just the cheapest thing you can find to move air. So yes, at home you can hear it very well. In the car, I don't think it's going to matter. There is a tiny fan also inside, which is barely doing anything useful apart from increasing the overall noise.
Consumption is 6A @ 12V, so careful to leave it plugged when the car is not running.
At home, empty, the inside got cold in about 1h. As usual for these items, don't expect that it does anything more than keeping cold what is already cold, it doesn't look like it has the power to actually cool down anything.
It can warm up and cool down by inverting the polarity of the connection, which makes me suspect that there is no controller of any kind: it is just plugged to the power, if the peltier is powered on one polarity it takes the heat out, if it's powered on the other polarity it take the heat it.
It's far from perfect, but at least the size is really good.

The sticker that is on the lid (the red stripe) was wonky and crumpled in one corner - slap dash manufacturing and quality control.
Some of the inner edges (lid and top of coolbox) are also rough.
All of that said, we took it for our first outing this weekend and it kept the food nice and cold - even kept two bags of ice cubes frozen for the whole weekend.
So, functionally, it’s great
Aesthetically it’s a bit rough around the edges.

In summary - its been brilliant. I've needed the air conditioning on in the car (to give you an idea of external temperatures) and it kept the chocolate bars hard and cold (and cyclists love a cold Kit Kat). We didn't have any issues with milk going off, or cheese weeping.
Overnight, powered by the mains, there was ice sometimes at the bottom of the box - so it does get cold. My car does keep power to the 12V socket for 1 hour after stopping, which meant it was still working whenever we had a break. Other cars don't do this - and I suspect this is why it doesn't work so well for other people.
On one training day when it was really cold outside, we turned it to warm, and gave the cyclists, warm sausage rolls and pastries. They loved it!
I've used it in both orientations, but the shelf doesn't hold much weight and in the end, we used it like a cool box, rather than a fridge.
Worth very penny - its been brilliant for us!
So, the coolbox did work, although I found out after reading up on Koolatron's Website that it doesn't cool as efficiently in fridge mode! Not great for me since that's what I bought it for. I found that it managed to get to about 15-16 degrees celcius below outside room temperature (even when stood 'upright') which isn't the claimed 20 degrees. Also, the quality of finish on this thing for a relatively expensive item is absolutely appalling. I can agree with the other reviews that mention this - the sticker on the front was hanging off on mine, and you can see the foam sticking out of the sides of the lid etc - it's just rubbish. The 'made in Canada' thing is popped on there I assumed as a point of pride for something that hasn't been farmed off to being made in China, but the company should be ashamed - they can't possibly think this is a good quality of finish. Also, the sliding 'lock' on the side is really stiff - you feel like you're going to break it when you open it. If this was £50/60 I'd probably have kept it due it fitting the space in my caravan bang on, but for £140 it's gone back!
In summary, it's 'fine' as a coolbox, but I would say the only reasons to buy this are if you absolutely need something that can be used in 'fridge' mode and maybe have a tight space to fit into. Otherwise, there's far better out there on the market for less money.
