This is also great for nature shots, or anytime you need the camera to be absolutely steady. Using the remote shutter in conjunction with a tripod will let you get perfect shots.
It uses an easily replaceable CR2032 cell which should last for months with normal use.
At least one other reviewer was saying that you have to re-pair this each time you want to use it. That is just not my experience at all. After the initial pairing with my iPhone5s, I can turn the shutter on/off, I can even turn my iPhone off and back on and the remote shutter connects with the phone as soon as I turn it back on. No pairing or reconnecting problems at all for me. Perhaps depending on what iPhone version and/or IOS version you have could affect the pairing/connect issue. But with my iPhone5s and IOS7, there were no issues.
This remote shutter looks like it is being sold not only by Kootek, but by everybody and their Uncle. Apparently some overseas company makes them and then lets other companies buy them and brand them as their own. Whatever. It works and I love it.
I was provided a free sample for review.
As soon as I installed the battery, I paired it to my iPhone without any problems. I was using the remote within minutes of opening the box. Very nice gadget for my iPhone.
This remote shutter release is remarkably easy to set up and use. First, turn this little remote "on" and then go into the normal pairing process on your smartphone. "Keyboard" may appear momentarily but is quickly replaced by "AB Shutter 3". Tap on it and it's paired. I had it ready to go in just a few seconds. Using the remote is also simplicity at its best - open the camera app on your smartphone and press the corresponding button (iOS or Android) on the remote to take a picture. There are no "hidden" settings to find or anything else to do. Truly, it could not be any easier. Pressing the "Android" button while paired with an Apple device has no effect.
Some other reviewers reported that this remote "lost" its pairing every time it was turned off and back on. I have purposely tested that because it would be pretty annoying, but I am not able to replicate that problem.
It's not documented in the instructions that come with this remote, but if you want to reset the pairing and use the remote with a different smartphone, just turn it on and then press and hold both buttons (iOS + Android) for about 2 seconds. The LED on the remote will flash rapidly to indicate it is in pairing mode.Read more ›
So, if you're thinking about buying this thing, do yourself a favor: DO NOT ORDER IT ONLINE! Based on my experience, this product is very unreliable and if you really need the remote shutter release for your phone, I can only suggest going to some electronic shop and buy it there. That way you'll at least be able to test it right there and get a working one (but most likely it won't last long anyway).
(1) it did not kill my bluetooth connection to my speaker to which I was streaming music, so a big plus for that!
(2) it functions like a mouse of sorts until you invoke the camera app. On my main screen when I pressed the Android button it brought up the app on which its 'cursor' was resting on.
For devices not supported out of the box (see the product description) you need to download an app called camera 360. I cannot say how well (or compatible) that app is, so caveat emptor if your device is not listed.
This works for movies and stills, but you have to first place your 'cursor' on whichever mode you want manually, then use the button to control off and on.
I love this for a few reasons (aside from the fact that it works with my phone and does what the description claims). First, I can mount my phone and control video recording of my practice sessions with a click of a button. Second, it allows me to fix my phone in an absolute steady holder and take photos or shoot video without any blur from shaking or movement from activating the camera.
With a small tripod this brings your phone to almost the convenience of a dedicated digital camera or video recorder. And it fits on a key ring!
