About the Author

Working with International News Service, the predecessor of United Press International, American John Rich spent three years in Korea covering the Korean War, from the outbreak in June 1950 to the armistice in 1953. After the war, he joined broadcaster NBC as a war correspondent, covering Vietnam, African civil wars and other major 20th century conflicts. In 1991, at the age of 73, he went to the Middle East to cover the first Gulf War. Currently retired, he splits his time between Maine and Florida.

The Opening Moves.

This book does a superb job at showing the Korean conflict. The photography is excellent, and the narratives complete each photograph. The Korean war, coming so quickly on the heels of WW2, in my view caused people to view this conflict in a different way.It was unlike WW2, we were fighting against people who were our former allies. Russian equipment was being used, and Chinese troops were doing the majority of the fighting. This war was not as clear cut as WW2, we were not attacked, in fact the war dealt with a nation we knew little about, and cared even less. But it should still be considered a war, although we fought primarly against Russia in the Cold War, this conflict must be seen as one of its opening exchanges. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the aftermath of WW2. Because although we did not know it, we had exchanged one enemy for another. JRV

He was a wonderful and fascinating man

This was written by my cousin. He died a few months ago. He was a wonderful and fascinating man, and our whole family loved him and were very proud of him. He was 95 when we "lost" him.

Just one problem

Great photos of military, civilian, countryside, and infrastructure. Great composition as well. Unfortunately the publisher foolishly went with matte paper instead of glossy, robbing the photos of 75% of their aesthetic value. The photos look much better on a computer than on paper. Should make an ebook instead. No fault to photographer John Rich...but the publisher's blunder was a major disappointment. Put this book next to Larry Burrows' Vietnam & you'll know what I'm talking about.

Colorful Photo History of the Korean War!

Here is a true rara avis! John Rich's KOREAN WAR IN COLOR, published by Seoul Selection in 2010, is a magnificent, comprehensive, full-color photo-history of the 'Forgotten War.' I am unaware of any other comparable history that covers the full span of the war and in such wonderful color imagery.

INS Correspondent Rich covered the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, roaming the war-torn peninsula and offshore waters with his trusty Nikon camera, filing stories and snapping gorgeous Kodachrome shots of whatever caught his eye. Decades later, as the 60th anniversary of the Korean War loomed, family friends urged Rich to dust off his photographs and the result is this enormously appealing and entertaining book.

KOREAN WAR IN COLOR features over 160 images, many full page and some that are spread over two pages. Rich seemingly was everywhere in Korea so the reader is treated to shots of American/South Korean/North Korean/Allied troops, tanks, artillery, ships, aircraft, helicopters, Korean peasants, politicians, generals, devastated cities, the Armistice negotiations and so on. Visually KOREAN WAR IN COLOR is a delight. Rich also provides a running commentary on the photographs and his time in Korea.

Given the rarity of color histories of the Korean War and Rich's wonderful photographic eye, KOREAN WAR IN COLOR gets high marks. It's a real eye-opener and a delight to page through. Highly recommended.
