Korg Monotron Delay
Analogue Ribbon Synthesizer
Go Anywhere Analog: That was the theme behind the remarkable battery-powered and palm-sized analog synthesizer that Korg dubbed the monotron. Now the powerful and fun-to-play monotron is joined by two new siblings. Each is played from a ribbon controller keyboard with newly added features. The monotron’s simple operation and ease of use (5 knobs and 1 switch) is alive and well, inviting hours of enjoyment and musical exploration.
A good delay was an essential part of the classic analog synthesizer sound. More often than not, that delay came from a tape-style echo machine until affordable digital delays were created. The monotron DELAY is an analog synthesizer optimized for sound effects. In addition to its analog oscillator, filter, and LFO, it also provides a Space Delay that's indispensible for swooping, cosmic sounds. The monotron DELAY even reproduces the pitch changes that occur when you vary the delay time, just as though you were using an analog tape echo. This fat and warm delay will add an authentic edge to your analog sounds!
The monotron DELAY's ribbon controller keyboard features a wide, four-octave range. This design allows the pitch to be controlled even more aggressively and dynamically, making the monotron DELAY a great weapon for a DJ to get the floor moving with irresistible sound. The reversed white keys and body adornments glows under black light illumination, making the monotron DELAY ideal for delivering a striking visual impact in nearly any club environment.

Analog Synth with Space Delay Korg's Monotron DELAY fits in your pocket, yet delivers enormous analog sound! Equipped with a built-in speaker and battery operation, Monotron DELAY is ready - anytime, anyplace. Best of all, it's a blast to play, with a level of simplicity allowing anyone to enjoy the world of analog synthesizers. Product Block Copy The monotron DELAY also provides an analog oscillator, filter, LFO, plus a Space Delay that's indispensable for swooping, cosmic sounds. As with the filter, the delay effect can be added to any external sound via the Aux In jack. The LFO offers a choice of waveshapes: Square and Triangle. In addition, a trimpot on the back panel can continuously adjust the waveshape to deliver even more versatility. The monotron DELAY's ribbon controller keyboard features a wide, four-octave range. The reversed white keys and body adornments glows under black light illumination, making the monotron DELAY ideal for nearly any club environment! VCO (Sawtooth) with Pitch control; VCF with Cutoff and Peak controls; Space Delay with Time and Feedback controls; LFO with Waveshape, Rate, and Intensity controls; Ribbon Keyboard with extra-wide four-octave range; keyboard glows under blacklight; Original MS-20 Filter with aux input allows the filter & delay to be applied to any source; Built-in speaker, battery power; graphics that glow under blacklight!

The VCF sounds fantastic, and the cross modulation knob adds a lot of character to the sound.
For those who have seen the original Monotron, you'll notice that there's no LFO on this unit. You're trading the LFO for the second oscillator and the quantization button. The result is a much more musical machine, but the tradeoff is real.
You also get an aux in jack, which allows you to run external audio through the excellent filter.
I said this was a "proof-of-concept," and it is - where the concept is, "A ridiculously affordable and fun analog synth that proves people want analog synthesizers, so Korg can go on to make tons more at other price points with different features." It *seems* like this device made other instruments, like the Volca series and the Minilogue, possible. And for that, I am tremendously grateful. And I really like this product. But having returned the unit I purchased, I would not buy another since I purchased the Volca Keys instead. The bottom line is that if you can afford this unit or the Volca Keys, you want the Volca Keys. But this is an excellent toy and a surprisingly fun instrument, if seriously limited in application.
The added bonus that you can run other audio sources through it is incredible. Just connecting my ipod and running some drum and bass through it was eye opening. I can only imagine how cool it'll sound to patch my Kaossilator or other sounds through it. its like you get a second instrument or effects unit.
Now the downside, the thing is quite imprecise. You can have some happy accidents playing around, but the knobs are so small that its hard to nail bpms with the "rate" dial (sorry, don't have the manual at hand) and good luck reliably hitting notes on this thing. There are some decent performances on youtube that people have, using a stylus or other smaller tool to hit the 'keys'.
However, the sounds are just too cool and you can get some neat effects or rhythm sounds. And that's what I'll focus on when using this instrument.
It isn't much as a musical instrument, with its short scale and tiny keyboard, but I found that I can play a crude blues pattern on it. I like the selectable scaling feature, though I've only used the chromatic mode so far. The scale-mode feature was the main reason I chose this flavor of Monotron. One interesting thing I found is that the scale and the notes played can be changed by holding two notes at a time. This could become more useful with some exploration.
The biggest complaint I have is that the all-plastic case has rather sharp edges that make for uncomfortable playing if you just hold the thing in your hands. I've thought of maybe sanding the edges off a little; it'd be easy and wouldn't hurt the device. I suppose a person could come up with some simple way to fasten it to a board or tabletop, maybe with some temporary tacky substance. That would allow better playing.
It's a lot of fun just exploring all the sonic textures possible. It's a toy. Have fun with it.
