The UR40 delivers digital quality sound in an ultra-lightweight design for listeners on-the-go. The UR40 features dynamic elements for a wide frequency response from 15-22,000 Hz. A 2 mil. titanium coating on its diaphragms increases the rigidity of the elements, minimizing mechanical distortion and ensuring exceedingly accurate sound reproduction. Computer-optimized neodymium iron boron rare earth magnet structures enable the UR40 to deliver greater volume, even with low-voltage portable devices. Oxygen-free copper voice coils improve signal transmission and conduction for cleaner, clearer sound. With its hybrid design, the UR40 combines the best of closed-style and open-style headphones. Closed leatherette earcushions form a light seal around the ears, enhancing bass frequencies. Screened earcups provide an open, hear-through sound that lets listeners stay in touch with the world around them. The result is a full frequency, clean sound that turns any recording into a "live" performance. At just over six ounces the UR40 wears comfortably even after hours of continuous listening. The airy mesh sling provides soft breathable support, ideal for those with touch-sensitive scalps. An adjustable headband accommodates all head shapes and sizes for maximum comfort. When not in use, the resilient, lightweight frame folds into a compact configuration that's protective, easy to carry and convenient to store. Perfect for travel, the UR40 includes a straight dual-entry eight foot cord. A gold-flashed 3.5mm (1/8") plug, L-shaped to minimize cord stress is included. The UR40 will delight listeners seeking heavyweight sound in a comfortable lightweight package.
Home and portable audio take on fresh life with quality headphones, and Koss's lightweight, closed-ear UR40 is designed to keep outside noises out and headphone sound in--perfect for use in busses and libraries alike. With its extended frequency range of 15 to 22,000 Hz, you'll never miss a single bass note or want for high-frequency splash or shimmer.
The UR40's titanium driver elements ensure taut low end and clear treble, while its collapsible headband design further lends it to portable applications and protects the headphone when not in use. The headphone comes with a four-foot, dual-entry cord and a .25-inch stereo adapter for use with hi-fi components.

Headphones are very personal, but I prefer any Koss 60ohm set to all of those.
Koss 60ohm sets are the Koss Portapro, Sportapro, KSC35, KSC75 and this set of course. I prefer the sound of the KSC35 and Portapro over the rest as they don't have the 'titanium' coated driver. UR40 is the most comfortable though and I can't imagine using anything other than over-the-ear headphones at the desk.
These are very comfortable to wear even for long periods of time.
You really have a fairly low bar when you're sticking with running unamped only. But, these just fit what I want to pay for headphones and will most likely exceed your expectations for the price. Good bass, good midrange and good treble. In their class they have a little more oomph in the bass region than everything else I've tested and I like this without adding a muddy sound.
I do keep a Sennheiser headset/mic around that the mic started failing on me long ago, and while it isn't high end, you can definitely tell you're losing detail in sounds in games and music.
If you found something you think is better in the sub $100 range with no amplifier, let me know! Considering I prefer these over Sennheiser HD558s, I think that's a tall order. But I'd love to give something else a spin.
I went looking, because I like them so much all this time!
A couple things.
The mesh head thing- it only stayed on a couple years. They headphones worked better without it anyhow I think. Smoother on my hair. Which has a fine texture, and is a bit frizzy- lots of fine short pieces. Sometimes the foldable joints catch in them. This happens on earrings, necklaces, other headphones and other things as well. No more on this product really. Function of having fine curly hair.
Sound has always been fantastic. I love the sound and am sad when I send a ton of cash on headphones that don't come close.
They are not a snug fit, but, are soft enough and comfy enough to wear to bed. Because of the tender fabric, it's started to deteriorate on the smooth fake leathery bits. So so soft all this time though. Really to last 13 years, NO COMPLAINTS!!!.
Not snug enough to work out in. Snug enough to casually hike or walk in. They won't just fall right off or anything.
Lightweight. Easy to make a pouch or toss them into a ziplock freezer quart bag to travel and keep them in your pack or bag more tidily.
I would agree with most reviews. I tend to consider the cables 'supple' instead of 'flimsy'-- and this is an important difference! Supple cables don't just out at awkward angles and get caught on as much stuff. You can keep your music device in your pocket and the cable stays nicely under your coat or shirt and bends where you need it to stay and likes being there rather than tugging intself back in to the shape it wants to be in like a stiffer cable.
These are one of the few products I would give 10 stars to if I could.
And I still would after 13 years!!!!!!
Actually they still work fine too. Really. I just noticed they are really a little fiddly nowadays because I used them so much, and was wondering if they still made them.
It's a bit disturbing that amazon remembered I bought them so long ago, though. I'm starting to hope Amazon never holds a grudge against me, cause they never forget!!
I just want to say, the SOUND quality is amazing. Open back headphones means better sounds and range, better than the "canned" sound/feeling from closed back headphones. I don't know what koss does, but their sound quality is amazing that I can't go back to other cheap headphones, or else my OCD kicks in.
80-200 dollar headphones are better, but this ain't that. This is a budget acoustic experience.
Also these are the most comfortable headphones ever. I can wear these for hours. I guess it's because the frame doesn't really clamp down on your heads strongly/tightly as most other headphones. the ear cushions are soft as well.
This headphone is for home use by the way because it's open back; everyone else will hear what you're listening to.
NEGATIVE: The huge con that everyone probably knows with Koss is the structural build quality of their budget plastic headphones. They feel and are fragile. Koss used high quality sound drivers, so they probably had to cut costs somewhere. I don't blame or complain too much. Just pointing it out there that these headphones are not sturdy. You have to be careful with them. The wires are thin and short. The frame is plastic. Understood? Great.
If you want strong sturdy headphones, you will have to pay more. I get it.
Maybe sturdier materials will become cheaper in the future and we'll get a sturdy budget Koss headphones. That would be perfect.
