The UR40 delivers digital quality sound in an ultra-lightweight design for listeners on-the-go. The UR40 features dynamic elements for a wide frequency response from 15-22,000 Hz. A 2 mil. titanium coating on its diaphragms increases the rigidity of the elements, minimizing mechanical distortion and ensuring exceedingly accurate sound reproduction. Computer-optimized neodymium iron boron rare earth magnet structures enable the UR40 to deliver greater volume, even with low-voltage portable devices. Oxygen-free copper voice coils improve signal transmission and conduction for cleaner, clearer sound. With its hybrid design, the UR40 combines the best of closed-style and open-style headphones. Closed leatherette earcushions form a light seal around the ears, enhancing bass frequencies. Screened earcups provide an open, hear-through sound that lets listeners stay in touch with the world around them. The result is a full frequency, clean sound that turns any recording into a "live" performance. At just over six ounces the UR40 wears comfortably even after hours of continuous listening. The airy mesh sling provides soft breathable support, ideal for those with touch-sensitive scalps. An adjustable headband accommodates all head shapes and sizes for maximum comfort. When not in use, the resilient, lightweight frame folds into a compact configuration that's protective, easy to carry and convenient to store. Perfect for travel, the UR40 includes a straight dual-entry eight foot cord. A gold-flashed 3.5mm (1/8") plug, L-shaped to minimize cord stress is included. The UR40 will delight listeners seeking heavyweight sound in a comfortable lightweight package.
Home and portable audio take on fresh life with quality headphones, and Koss's lightweight, closed-ear UR40 is designed to keep outside noises out and headphone sound in--perfect for use in busses and libraries alike. With its extended frequency range of 15 to 22,000 Hz, you'll never miss a single bass note or want for high-frequency splash or shimmer.
The UR40's titanium driver elements ensure taut low end and clear treble, while its collapsible headband design further lends it to portable applications and protects the headphone when not in use. The headphone comes with a four-foot, dual-entry cord and a .25-inch stereo adapter for use with hi-fi components.

Headphones are very personal, but I prefer any Koss 60ohm set to all of those.
Koss 60ohm sets are the Koss Portapro, Sportapro, KSC35, KSC75 and this set of course. I prefer the sound of the KSC35 and Portapro over the rest as they don't have the 'titanium' coated driver. UR40 is the most comfortable though and I can't imagine using anything other than over-the-ear headphones at the desk.
These are very comfortable to wear even for long periods of time.
You really have a fairly low bar when you're sticking with running unamped only. But, these just fit what I want to pay for headphones and will most likely exceed your expectations for the price. Good bass, good midrange and good treble. In their class they have a little more oomph in the bass region than everything else I've tested and I like this without adding a muddy sound.
I do keep a Sennheiser headset/mic around that the mic started failing on me long ago, and while it isn't high end, you can definitely tell you're losing detail in sounds in games and music.
If you found something you think is better in the sub $100 range with no amplifier, let me know! Considering I prefer these over Sennheiser HD558s, I think that's a tall order. But I'd love to give something else a spin.
First, I'll get sound quality out of the way. I'm no 'audiophile' -- generally, just about any modern day headphones sounds good to me. Personally, the design of the headphones (circumaural, supraural, earbuds, etc) seems to make more a difference in sound quality to me than anything else. But to get to the short of it, the Koss UR40 do sound pretty damn good. It gives as good of a bass response as my dead Senn HD202 did and the treble response is great. Admittedly, it does seem to lean more towards bass than treble (which is a bit unfortunate as I do find treble more important), but overall, the quality is more than good, and all my music sound as good as it ever did.
Okay, so if I find the sound quality as good as other headphones I've used in the past, why am I so in love with it? Well, it seems the design is good in more than just looks. Other reviewers mentioned it already and I can't stress this enough -- the Koss UR40 is SUPER COMFORTABLE.
Two factors allows for this. First, the headphones fits very lightly over my head -- almost the same way glasses fit onto your face. It simply rests on your ears instead of constricting like many headphones do. Second, the UR40 is extremely light weight; the weight is listed as 6oz, but it actually feels a lot lighter than most other headphones I've used which weights the same or even less. These two factors combined to make the UR40 fit in a way that is unobstrusive; I'm wearing it as I'm typing this review right now and I could think that, over time, I could forget I'm even wearing it. I've used quite a few headphones in the past and the only other headphones I can remember coming close to this level of comfort is the Sennheiser HD555.
To get to the point, I really do like the Koss UR40 primarily because of how comfortable it is combined with a very good sound quality. Some other reviewers seem to disagree, but I also really like the design as it looks sleek and the headband actually looks really neat. Plus the fact it's foldable makes for much better portability. Overall, there is only one complaint I can think of with this and it is the cord length. It's a teensy bit too short. The cord length is roughly 1.2m (or 4ft). I listen to music primarily on my computer, but I still move around a lot. I have a headphone cord extender already, but personally, I think the UR40's cord length could use another meter. One other thing -- this is not a problem for me personally, but it's one some others will definitely not appreciate: the UR40 has sound leakage. Someone next to you will definitely hear the music (and hear it with great clarity!), but it's not so bad that it'll wake a sleeping person.
- Amazing comfort level
- Great sound quality
- Great design
- Excellent price
- Cord length is a bit small
- There is an amount of sound leakage
Needless to say, I highly, highly recommend the Koss UR40. Typically, when my headphones breaks, I simply move onto another brand/model as I like to experiment, but I admit that moving away of this will probably be pretty difficult for me. Not that it might be a big issue as I hear the UR40 also has amazing durability.
