EDIT 8/24- This is a hand-made product that is now falling apart and I suspect (but I'm not sure) might be the cause of some data loss during transfers. Now that there is a Seagate cable that does the same thing this product shouldn't carry 5 stars IMHO. Original review follows:

I bought a Dell Studio XPS 16 and I was tired of my slow-as-molasses USB external hard drive. My laptop features a Powered ESATA port, so I looked around my local Frys Electronics to find an ESATA compatible enclosure. Guess what- most (if not all) conventional drive enclosures that feature ESATA -require- a USB connection as well for power! Not only is this inefficient (I have to carry 2 cables now?) but the USB and ESATA ports on my Dell are as far away from each other as is possible (front-right and back-left)!

I found a sweet enclosure (Patriot Convoy XL) that holds 2 x 2.5" SATA drives and includes an internal RAID controller and has what amounts to a standard SATA hookup at the back (power and data side by side, same as a bare hard drive). This cable is just what the doctor ordered. Now I just need one cable, and as an added bonus- I can connect ANY SATA drive to my laptop with a simple cable. No more swapping enclosures! No more awkward network file transfers!

I have been using this cable heavily for about a month and it is showing no signs of wear-and-tear. Overall great product.

Works as advertised. Flawlessly. Excellent contruction. Sturdy!
This is not to be used with a regular SATA HDD (not enough power, or perhaps only 5 V instead of 5 V & 12 V a normal HDD needs), but it works well with a laptop's SATA HDD.
Also only for usage with new type (especially laptop's e-SATA outlets) that provide also powwer together with the data. This is not on all laptops.
Customer's service from the vendor was excellent. Highly recommended.

Bought this eSATAp cable along with the companion PCI-e card IO-PESU220, also made by Koutech. With this cable attached to an external 3.5" drive, I get transfer speeds of 90 MB/sec, three times the speed of USB 2.0. I don't need an enclosure with a clumsy power brick to operate the external because power and data are both carried by this cable. Nice!

The cable is well-made and long enough (40 inches) to reach from the port at the back of my computer to the SATA drive sitting on the front of my desk.

CablesOnline shipped the item to me in 5 days at a cost of only $3. Good deal.

I thought I had the correct esata port for this cable. The "powered" esata/usb port on my laptop or desktop is no good for this cable.
The 3.5 inch sata drives need 12v, but USB ports will only provide upto 5v. So it is unusable for 3.5" drives. You have to get the PCI card from the same manufacturer which will provide the needed 12v.

No option but to return it.

The product specification needs to be clear that it will only work with their card. Do not buy this without the card.
Checkout koutech website to better understand how this cable may be used with the specified card.

The same reason why iPad will not charge on most USB ports.

i was not too sure if this would work with a 3.5" hdd but works well with a 2.5". i dont think it provide enough power for the 3.5" disk but luckily i discovered it fits with my 2.5" hdds
