First, let's talk about the one negative I encountered:
1. I was so eager to try this thing out that I immediately tossed some (high quality) chocolate into the bowl. I went digging around my kitchen for tea lights. Unfortunately, all I found were the slightly taller votive variety. No biggie, they fit inside. It should be good to go, right? If you use a taller tea light you will undoubtedly notice that the thing doesn't stay lit. It needs the shorter candle to allow for adequate air flow.
Other than that, let me tell you a little bit about the product. The bowl is (naturally) smaller than it would be in a regular mug of similar height to accomodate the little tea light hearth beneath. However, there is still plenty of space for contents. Two mugs, four forks included. This means that my wife can eat her zero sugar dark chocolate while I indulge in milk (real) chocolate. It's a beautiful thing.
I had always learned that you cannot melt cheese in tea lit fondue sets owing to a higher melting point than your average chocolate bar. I, however, was able to melt cheese. It was delicious. One thing you'll want to avoid is the temptation to put this thing in the microwave. I'm not saying that there is something wrong with the mug itself being in there. However, the microwave will cause your chocolate or cheese to separate into an unpleasant goo. Let the tea light do its thing, even if it takes a little longer.
When you're not using it as a fondue set, it is also a great mug. I crammed some biscotti into that little hearth because I wanted to feel like an innovator who found multiple uses for his fondue mug. In the end, I was just another idiot with biscotti crammed into his fondue-mug hearth.
If I never use the mugs again, they won't take up too much space in my cabinet. Even if I lose the fondue forks, I can still use the things. All in all, I can't think of a reason NOT to have these mugs around (except that my doctor seems to think I need to dip fewer things into chocolate and cheese).
Next up, I will use these for when company comes over. Two people can easily tag team a mug each. Though, I'm not sure how safe it is to get between me and melted cheese while I have a sharp fork.
I use mine all the time for keeping hot nacho cheese dip hot, and it works fabulously for keeping individual hot dips and fondue hot, However, my cheese dip did burn on the bottom the first time I used it for a long snacking session, so it def WOULD burn your fondue/dip unless you stir the contents of the fondue cup's reservoir often. However, I immediately came up with an easy solution. I first light the candle & add 3-4 ounces of very hot water to the fondue mug & let the cup get well heated to keep the hot water very hot, then put my already hot dip into a small Pyrex ramikin(one of the small ones with a wedge shape than will go down into the mug enough to touch or be very close to the water and be very stable, but the flared rim of the ramikin still rests up on the edge of the mug), the mug's candle keeps the hot water very hot, the ramikin's bottom touches the hot water so that my cheese dip stays nice & hot, yet does not ever burn. LOVE these things!
The design of the double vent is also great, because to speed up the heating time, I was able to place 2 tea lights and the fondue was all melted and ready to eat probably in about 20 minutes or so (taking cheese from room temperature, though). It really didn't take too long. We did take care to mix the cheese frequently, so we didn't have a problem with cheese sticking to the sides.
HOWEVER, after a single use, the paint starts chipping off. We finished the cheese and were cleaning the mugs, and as we were about to put them on the drying rack, we noticed that the paint and some of the mug itself started to chip in a couple of places! We were very gentle and didn't even scrub intensely or anything (definitely didn't hit it on anything), and the chipping occurred in a couple of places. I could maybe understand a small chip in a single place in case for example we overlooked something (even though we were very careful), but not in a couple of places and on BOTH mugs. This is definitely a manufacturing flaw. Actually, it even makes me question whether the mug may have chipped during the eating process... we didn't notice it until only after cleaning, but we didn't treat it any differently while washing!
For that reason, the chipping makes the mugs unusable, even though it's a cool concept. After the first time, the mugs were already chipped in a couple of places. The only reason why I give two stars is because it's a cool concept and we were able to greatly enjoy the mugs once. Not worth it though since it's a "one-use" deal.
First, realize what you're getting. These are the snack equivalent of a fondue meal. They don't make the cheese or chocolate 'hot', just very warm. In a lot of ways, this is better since you can heat up and snack on your foods more easily. Side note, I'd recommend liquid cheese like velveeta packets for the best cheese experience. Shredded cheese doesn't really melt right. Dipping chocolate melts perfectly though and didn't burn.
Second, remember how candles actually work. If you put a candle into an enclosed space, it will burn up all the oxygen and go out. For this reason, you need to have this mug in an area with air movement. A ceiling fan, an open window, an oscillating fan on the other side of the room...just something. If you keep it sitting in an area where no air can get to it (not much! it still just a tiny candle), you'll have trouble keeping it lit.
Hope this helps! It really is a very clever product and I am really glad I purchased it.
