For most people, salty licorice takes some getting used to, and some licorice lovers never acquire the taste. That's okay. If you're new to salt licorice, I recommend getting into it gradually. Begin with the Dutch coins (also known as Muntdrops). These have a salty overtone but the sweetness and deep licorice taste predominates. Then try some Farm Licorice (so called because of the cute little farm animal shapes in which it comes) or some Zout (which means "salt"). This will introduce you to traditional salty licorice. Finally, go for the Double Salt Licorice (Dubbel Zout).
While all the Dutch Double Salt brands I've tasted are good, the Kraepelien & Holm is the best. My wife and I are co-owners of a candy store that specializes in gourmet licorice, and this is the brand we carry. Our customers have been quite satisfied with K&H. Each piece is fairly small, round, and chewy, with a strong licorice taste, and, of course, a generous amount of salmiak salt. The only time I wouldn't recommend eating a piece is if you're suffering from canker sores. I can't stress too strongly that this licorice is salty, and will have the same effect on canker sores as does any other salty food.
While Double Salt licorice is great by itself, I'd also recommend it with a good, rich European beer. Try it with a Belgian Tripel or another dark European brew.
Also those people who gave this 1 star because they didn't like the taste is plain dumb as the ranking is based on this brand versus other brands. Buying 3 huge bags of this without having tried salted licorice before makes no sense at all.
I have only recently become acquainted with salted licorice. I actually prefer the normal salted variety, although the salty kick - from ammonium salts rather that sodium chloride - is very strong and strangely satisfying in these double-salt rounds.
I would advise anybody who is thinking of trying salted licorice to seek out a small pack of the stuff first of all. If you like it, go ahead and order one of the regular-salted Kraepelien & Holm Farm Salt Licorice, 2.2-Pound Bags (Pack of 3) available on Amazon, making sure to take advantage of the subscription offer. Otherwise, you risk wasting your money on something you may consider inedible.

Just be aware that you are ordering double salt and that many folks will find this unpleasant. I thought I was ready to step up from 'salted' after enjoying it for a few years. Read morePublished 3 months ago by M. Birnbaum
It includes "ammonium chloride" instead of what we usually mean by salt, sodium chloride.
I ended up trying a couple and throwing out all three bags. Pity.
