1. The V-shaped tool to put the plastic rings off and on
2. The spring-loaded rod to adjust the lift up and down
3. A small hex key to lock the lift into place after adjustment
I have a feeling that I will forget to lock it into place with the hex key, as there's no indicator to tell you when it's locked or unlocked. Why are three tools needed to adjust this thing? The instructions lacked adequate diagrams and were difficult to follow, which made assembly take longer than necessary. Eventually I figured everything out. Designed to work with PORTER-CABLE 7518. It will work with other routers, but you have to buy special pads from Kreg. It seems like this clumsy design was meant to get around other company's patents. It's absolutely disappointing.
I took R. Willcox's route and ordered the Incra Mast-R-Lift II, which required the "INCRA CleanSweep Router Table Adapter" ($20) since I own the Kreg router table and don't want to get rid of it. I am in full agreement with Mr. Willcox. The Incra adjusts incredibly smooth, and knowing when it's locked and unlocked is quick and easy. All adjustments are done with ONE tool. The ring inserts are held into place by strong magnets, and pop into place easily. In order to pop the insert out all you need is a small screwdriver or hex wrench. All the adjustments can be done from the top of the table, even the levelers, while the Kreg's design requires you to get under the table. With the Kreg lift returned, I'm now completely satisfied with the Incra.
It turns out my local Rockler store had both lifts set up side-by-side in store. So if you want to see these lifts first hand and have a local Rockler you could try that.
UPDATE #2: I was thumbing through a copy of Fine Woodworking's Tool Guide for 2015 and noticed a section on router lifts. They did not review the Kreg for some reason. I would've been interested in their take. The Incra got a good review, but their top pick was the Excalibur 40-125 by General International ($369). The best value award went to the JessEm Rout-R-Lift II ($189). JessEm builds Incra's lifts for them, hence the similar names.
I'd recommend getting a sheet of rubber or leather roughly 6"x6" and cutting a slot in it to fit around the router spindle. It's easy to mar the opening when removing or tightening bits in the collet if you aren't careful.
It is solid, strong and simple to operate, not bad looking either, it's great for above the table bit changes and it's direct driven (does not use belts like some brands) I even bought a Porter Cable 7518 router just to use with it and if you think that the phenolic plate fits good, wait till you see how this aluminum router lift fits, it also has self leveling inserts, it's perfect, Kreg really hit this one out of the park.
Friday April 30th Update, After using the router lift a few times and having a lot of fun, I thought it would be a nice feature to add a Wixey WR525 Remote Digital Readout to to the router lift so I bought one, following the instructions supplied, you are supposed to drill a hole in the plate as well as the assembly that holds the motor with the included drill bit so I thought to myself that this may take an hour or more, but when I took the lift out of the router table,to my surprise, it was already pre-drilled for the installation. These people at KREG seem to think of everything, thus saving me a lot of time and possible frustration. The best just keeps getting better, I hope this review helps you guys in some way.
